I came across a question on the DAT Destroyer, and it confused me over taxonomy.

In the answers page, it says that Paramecium is in the Kingdom Protista, and green algae are in the Kingdom Protista.

When studying, I use many sources to get a good understanding of a particular topic, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of information of this in Cliffs AP (3rd), Feralis' Notes, or even Google. A Google search says that Paramecium are in a different kingdom (not Protista), and that green algae is a plant, hence in the kingdom Plantae. (Now, I do know that cyanobacteria isn't a plant). Can anyone clear this up for me? Should I just follow what the DAT Destroyer says? I would really appreciate the help.

Paramecium is in kingdom Protista and green algae can differentiate (usually unicellular are Protista and multicellular are Plantae).

Yes it is a tricky subject, and one that is constantly being revised by the scientific community (new supergroup classifications) but for the the DAT know that the the 5 kingdom system is what you will be tested on:
  • Paramecium is absolutely Kingdom Protista -> classified as Ciliates
  • The "green algae" (Kingdom Protista as of now) is a paraphyletic (descended from a common evolutionary ancestor or ancestral group, but not including all the descendant groups) group because it excludes the Plantae. Like the plants, the green algae contain two forms of chlorophyll, which they use to capture light energy to fuel the manufacture of sugars, but unlike plants they are primarily aquatic. Because they are aquatic and manufacture their own food, these organisms are called "algae," along with certain members of the Chromista, the Rhodophyta, and photosynthetic bacteria, even though they do not share a close relationship with any of these groups.
Green algae are divided into two main groups, the charophytes and the chlorophytes. The charophytes are the algaemost closely related to land plants
  • For Kingdom Plantae it starts with the nonvascular plants (Bryophytes)
    Phylum Hepatophyta (Liverworts )
    Phylum Bryophyta (Mosses)
    Phylum Anthocerophyta (Hornworts)

Destroyer has most of the information you need to know. Cliffs third edition is a bit outdated, so some information is needed.
You need to be Familiar with 3 Domains Bacteria, Eukarya and Archaea.

You can look at Campbell's Bio for more information on it. This book will give you extra information if you feel like you need more understanding.

Hope this helps.
