Hello all,

I am faced with a serious dilemma and can not seem to come up with an adequate decision 😕.

I am having a VERY hard time desiding between NYU and Buffalo. I know there were previous threads int his regard, but every situation may be different and here is mine:

New York University:

Pro's

-Very close to home (I am from the city)
-Know many people there
-It is in the city
-Am familiar with the area
-Already deposited at NYU
-Specialization rate is higher than at Buffalo

Con's

-The ticket price at NYU is more than my housing plus tuition at Buffalo

BUFFALO:

Pro's:

-Cheaper than NYU
-Family like feel
-Seem to care more about students than NYU

Con's

-Borrial forest location AKA VERYYYY cold (an I am from NYC and say it is much colder there)
-The location seems very empty. This is may be because I practically spend my entire life in the city and the suburb life is new to me.
-Specialization rate lower than that of NYU

Buffalo is a better dental school, from what I read on SDN. And the most important factor, PRICE.

Go to Buffalo; you don't want to be 450K in debt.

Yay!! Congrats, I am happy for your acceptances!! 🙂

I haven't interviewed at any of them but IMO Buffalo is a better and cheaper school. But again, NYC is not my thing 🙂

Even with the 20k/year scholarship they offered me, I turned down NYU bc of cost, location and class size.
You are only one person, if you do well you have a decent chance of specializing no matter which school you attend; so I wouldn't consider rates if I were you....

Buffalo!

don't be afraid of change. learn to thrive in a new environment...while saving a large amount of cash. go to buffalo.

It's hard to give up NYC, but you will pay back your loans 10 years earlier if you choose Buffalo over NYU.

That Buffalo tuition is a bargain, and you will regret it if you turned it down.

Specialization depends on the individual way more than it depends on the school. As residents and specialists in this forum have stated multiple times, what you do in dental school is more important that what dental school you came from.

You can come out like a lumberjack dentist. That's like 2 degrees. So worth it.

Where did you discover specialization rates of both program?

What is the total difference in cost? I feel like I remember you saying you would live at home during d-school.

Thank you all for the replies.

If I choose to live at home to attend NYU, then that would be 10k+ more than it would cost me to attend and live at Buffalo.

I am just so confused at this point and very much broke and the deposit is due in a few days!

wait... 10k or 100k?

If 100k is the difference, its a no brainer, buffalo

the benefit of going to NYU for your case is to be able to go to school from home. Its a benefit for you because you can probably focus more on your studies since im assuming food, rent, and laundry can be taken care of by your parents.
Although there so many factors to consider, I would say go with what you think would be most beneficial to you. Yes, tuition is a big factor to majority of us but I think its also important to choose a school you think you can get the most of out of and enjoy the most.

He's talking about about 10k difference between the two schools counting ONLY NYU tuition vs. UB's tuition+housing cost x 4 = about 40-50k difference in total for 4 years.

She's* 🙂

Thanks for the clarification!

I say, go to Buffalo, save the money, and use the money to buy a nice place in the city, or to start your practice, or whatever.

You have the rest of your life to live in NYC. You can handle Buffalo for four years!

(And this is coming from someone who loves New York more than anything!)

Thank you all for the suggestions and advice. I guess I have to really sit down and determine if the cons really outweigh the pros. Both, NYU and Buffalo are great schools, more than applying and the anticipation of waiting, the decision making process is most grueling.

I wouldn't make the big question price. I would make the big question getting used to a new environment:

-suburb living
-Possibly having to drive everywhere
-Making all new friends
-Leaving behind family support in the city
-Leaving behind connections you've made
-Leaving behind all of the activities you do in the city regularly

In this instance I'd say you would be paying less for a school that can offer you less because you're already in NYC. If you think you can make the move then by all means go to Buffalo, it's cheaper after all!

OP is there anything tying you to NYC other than the fact that you've lived there for forever?

Also, would you have to buy a car in Buffalo?

Dentalkid, I didn't see Buffalo, but I think you should go to NYU. I couldn't imagine driving 6 hours or taking a 30 minute plane ride to come back home when you wished. I liked that NYU was closeby. If you go to Buffalo, the cost may be the same as NYU if you are constantly travelling home. Oh, and I have a fear of airplanes so I think your better off going to the school where you can stay on ground from my perspective. In addition, everyone I know (including the dentist I shadowed) has the utmost respect for NYU. When I tell them I am going to a state school, they question my judgment.

So, you put both deposits down? The NYU one was steep. I wonder if Buffalo refunds your deposit like SB does. And, I totally agree with you! Making the decision was the hardest part. I just put down my deposit and mentally pretended like that was my only option so I wouldn't second guess myself.
