Hi I am a Sophmore in college right now. I decicided to become a Vet my second semester of Freshman year. Right now I am volunteering at a local shelter walking dogs and cleaning cages. I have talked to my vet about volunteering there and will be next summer. I have also limited my school choices to 4 based on the pre reqs:
1.CSU(homestate)
2. WSU
3. MSU
4. OSU
The one probelm I am having is understanding the timeline for applying to vet school. I have planned out my schedule for all the semesters and should be finishing school in 4 1/2 years, so Fall '012. I plan to take the GRE Junior year. But, when should I apply to vet school, my final year or the last semester of my Senior year. Leaving only Physics, Physics Lab and one of my Majors electives.

The second problem I am having is with Inorganic Chem. My school has an inorganic chem class but I dont see a lab. WSU and MSU both require it.

The third problem is with some other MSU pre reqs, Nutrition and Eukaryotic Cell Biology. My school has a class on Cell and Molecular Biology but doesnt have a Animal nutrition class.

The forth and final question is about OSU pre reqs. I have taken College Algebra and plan on taking Statistics and Calc 1. Do I then have to take Trig?

Thanks for your guys help.

If you plan to matriculate in the fall of 2013 (and graduate in 2017), you would apply during the summer / fall of 2012.

Since I didn't apply to your intended schools, I can't give much advice on your pre-req situation, but lots of people take classes at other universities if their home university doesn't offer a necessary class. It is generally considered acceptable to take a couple online classes from a reputable university as well; several people on this forum have done so and if you do a search on this forum for "animal nutrition online" for example there should be threads discussing the various online courses people have taken and how well they liked the programs.

Thanks! I just looked up the other school on my campus and they have inorganic chem with lab 😀.

As far as MSU goes, they aren't very strict about the animal nutrition requirement, where as some other schools are (I'm taking that requirement this year and it's just called "Nutrition".) They will be able to tell you what transfers fairly easily I think.

As far as OSU, you have to take PreCalc or higher math classes (aka those w/ PreCalc as a prereq). So your Calc 1 would count. Stats and/or College Algebra wouldn't (as a friend of mine found out the hard way...) Good Luck!

according to the vmsar for 2010 matriculation, the math requirements say "algebra and trig" for OSU.

I'd be surprised that inorganic chem does not have a lab. The inorganic chemistry required by vet schools is usually called "intro chemistry" or "general chemistry" at a lot of schools, least it was at mine, and almost always has a lab component. So the inorganic chemistry you are looking at may actually be an upper division course, just something to double check.

For classes not at your university, look into summer options and online courses. Oregon State and Purdue both have online animal nutrition courses, though Oregon State's is only available in the summer. I just finished it and actually thought it was pretty good for an online class.

(and just to clarify, the OSU you are referring to is The Ohio State right? Let's not forget there are other OSU's out there, *cough*Oregon State*cough* and Oklahoma State too) : )

Yeah I was talking about The Ohio State, but I actually am going to apply to Oregon too 😀. You dont often hear about Oregon on the forums.

And I kind of laugh now at my post because with just a few clicks around some of my school choices websites I discovered, Inorganic Chem is Gen Chem. But I thank everyone for their input. 😀
