  1. Podiatry Student
I am graduating the december 2012 with a biology major with a 2.4 GPA from SUNY Binghamton. I have research experience for one semester. I've done volunteering jobs at hospitals and have been a office secretary at a pediatricians office. I am starting to show interest in medicine but I know that I cannot get anywhere with a GPA like that. I have not taken my MCATs and I'm very confused about my future. help please?

Unfortunately the answer is yes.

really? so if i start studying for my mcats right now and take them in january (im scoring a 22 right now without studying) do you think I could still have a chance??

To the OP...

...If someone came to me and asked if, though they happened to be morbidly obese with emphysema, they could be entered to run a marathon.

Well...sure....you can find some places that will take your money and let you put on a number and run with everyone for a few paces, but eventually you'll fall behind.

Your MCAT and GPA aren't the limiting factor for your medical school success; the real limiter is the motivation that earned them. My fat guy analogy may not be airtight, but I hope it gives a better idea as to what you need to be worrying about. Getting into pod school is by far the easiest part of the process.

Please understand, I don't mean to say that you won't make it, but you do need to understand that podiatry school is exponentially more difficult than any academics you've had thus far, and the effort required to snag a 2.4 undergrad GPA applied here will be enough work to put you in the last spot in your class, lucky to pass a single class.

It's doable, but you really, /really/ need to have a good understanding of the work involved if you're considering throwing at least 25k at an education.

At this point in your career, you should have a pretty good idea of what you are capable of. You most likely can get into 1 of the schools with your stats if you apply early in the cycle. Pod school isn't leaps and bounds harder than undergrad imo. Just requires much more dedication and focus, due to the volume of material. You need to ask yourself why you ended with a 2.4 GPA. If it was because of a lack of effort, then obviously that would need correcting before entering pod school. You can graduate pod school with a 2.4 GPA, but you probably won't land a competitive residency. Good luck
