hey guys! so this upcoming semester I'm taking an astronomy class called "theories of the universe." would this class count towards my science gpa? it's course title is listed as being taught by the astronomy department. ALSO, I noticed that nursing is under the non-science section in the list below. at my school, classes such as anatomy, nutrition and microbiology are listed under "nursing" yet in the list below they are considered science - would they also count towards my science gpa? thanks 🙂

The surefire way is to log into your account and send AACOMAS a message. Have course descriptions, as well as the URL of the online catalog from which you acquired those course descriptions, available for the AACOMAS rep just in case. Department names are sometimes misleading and don't reflect the actual course title or descriptor, as in the case of your anatomy and microbiology courses. I would suspect that allowances would be readily made once the AACOMAS rep sees the title and description of those nursing classes you mentioned. Again, messaging them is the only way you would know for sure.

*By the way, the are usually very quick about responding to messages

Astronomy = no. The name of the class doesn't matter, the course and number do. For instance, at my school, Anatomy & Physiology 1 is "BIOL 207" and A&P 2 is "BIOL 208." They will count in my sGPA. I'm not 100% sure, but if a class was called A&P 1, but was "NURSING 200," I don't think it would be included in sgpa.

As far as I know, if the course name/number isn't Bio, Chem, Physics, or Math, it isn't a "science" class as far as amcas is concerned.

wait.. now I'm really confused. are you sure about this part? cause first off, I've read on these forums that math doesn't count towards the science gpa. what about all the engineering classes that don't fit under those titles? (I thought engineering counts towards science gpa)

I guess I have a lot of research to do before I apply haha

You are correct. AACOMAS doesn't count math towards your science GPA. AMCAS does.

Astronomy does count towards science. Were you inferring above that it didn't?

Yes, I was mistaken. I thought Bio, Chem, Physics, and Math were the only things considered science.

but what about my "Theories of the Universe" class? It has a title "ASTR" and is taught by the astronomy department.

I would say yes, but you might shoot AACOM an email just to be sure. But again, since it was titled "ASTR" then I'm about 99.9% certain it will count as "other science". I took Astronomy too, but mine was in the Physics Department and therefore titled "PHYS".

Yeah the obvious science courses are of course science, and the below are under "other science".

Agricultural Science
Astronomy
Chiropractic
Electronics
Engineering
Epidemiology
Geology
Kinesiology
Medical Technology
Meteorology
Nutrition
Pharmacy
Physical Anthropology
Physical Geography (This is the same as Earth Science)
Physical Science
Physician Assistant
Radiology

I'm definitely going to send an email. these responses have been really helpful, thanks a lot guys 🙂

Definitely ask the AACOMAS guys, because they decide what counts and what don't. However, if you feel strongly that certain course counts as certain subject but they categorized it as another, then you can contact them about it. They are open to reasons.

hey guys, just wanted to let you know that I messaged AACOMAS and they said my theories of the universe as well as all my microbio and nutrition (which are both listed under "nursing") will count towards my science gpa. and yes, they responded lightning fast (I sent them a message last night haha).

This should not be this confusing

AMCAS: Biology, chemistry, physics, math, hence the acronym 'BCPM'

AACOMAS: BCP and instead of math, "Other Science" like astronomy, geology, geography, etc.

at my school classes such as nutrition and microbiology are listed under "nursing." AACOMAS lists nursing under under non-science. that's where the confusion arises.

and you're wrong because according to AACOMAS geography falls under the "non-science category" so... that's why this can be confusing...

Geography is under "Other Science"
AACOM calls it Physical Geography, but that applies to general geography/earth science courses, etc.

just wondering, so did your astronomy class count towards sgpa? I took an astronomy class called PHYS 010.
