I'm sorry if this thread is redundant with another somewhere but I am fixin to wear myself out trying to figure out the match. I am probably making it harder than it needs to be but regardless.....

Question 1.
I am at the end of my 3rd year at LECOM and I have heard that if you apply to both DO and MD residencies and match to both, you get dropped from the allopathic match and must commit to the DO. Is this true? If so does this apply to the internship match as well.

For example. I apply to MD residency A (which is really where I want to go) and I apply to DO residency or internship B (soely as a backup) and I get into both, am I now not allowed to go to MD residency A?

Question 2.
I was told by an attending that unless I rotate at the facility that I want to do my residency then I don't stand a chance of getting matched there. This concerns me b/c I can not financially afford to rotate through the places I would like to go.

Question 3.
What is the typical # of residencies applied for by a perspective ER resident?

Question 4.
Is there a site that lists how many DO residents have been accepted to certain programs?

I really appreciate any help anyone can give!!! 🙂

You're only pulled from the MD match if you actually match at at DO program. If you're only using DO as backup, then bypass the DO match. If there is a DO program that you'd be happy with, then you can rank that through the DO match and if you get it you're pulled from the MD match but if you don't get it you've still got the ball rolling in the MD match.

You don't have to rotate everywhere you're interested in applying to. Choose a couple of places to rotate at early in your 4th year. Get good LORs from those docs.

Varies quite a bit. this year's interview thread might give you some idea.

Question 4.

Look at the websites for the programs you're interested in and see if they have any DOs. SAEM also has a good listing of programs that could give you some idea (ie: some programs have DO attendings listed on the page).

I second the www.emramatch.org site, then use this as a guide to focus on which programs to apply to (it lists the number of DO's accepted to the program in the last five years).

Many of my top choices to enter into the match were places that i did NOT rotate at. Many people match where they did NOT rotate at.

Remember that it is a numbers game. Concerning how many programs to apply to, it is the wrong time to get cheap. Apply to a bunch (i.e. 25+) and maximize your odds --then turn down interviews as the season progresses. It will be money well spent in the end. (this is a reasonable use of your visa/mastercard).

Being a DO is pretty common in mainstream MD EM programs, but you are a LITTLE bit behind the competition (slightly inflammatory to my fellow DO's --please don't get hot under the coller). Good board scores and LOR's will make all the difference. Not sure if you took the USMLE --but a strong USMLE definitely helps.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the wonderful information. I feel like the water is much less muddy!!!!!
