Can anyone please clear this up? In the Kaplan book, it says that the placenta is used for fetal exchange of food, oxygen, water and waste. I have seen practice questions where it asks about fetal respiration and the answer is the umbicial cord. This just confuses me. I have also looked online for possible answers and found that the umbilical cord connects the fetus to the placenta. I am just confused on how to differentiate the two. Thanks!

The fetus is connected to the placenta by the umbilical cord. The placenta draws nourishment and oxygen, which it supplies to the fetus, from the maternal circulation.
