I've signed up for student hosting for a few of my interviews I have coming up, but I was wondering if there is a way to connect with medical students at schools that do NOT offer student hosting programs. I don't necessarily mean crashing on a med students couch, but just meeting up for lunch, maybe auditing some classes. Does this sound like something that could happen? (Would like to hear from some medical students on this)

For example, I am interviewing somewhere in October that doesn't offer student hosting, and it ended up being cheaper for me to fly out if I stayed an extra day. Do you think medical students would be open to connecting with me during my extra day? And what is the best way to plan such a rendezvous?

Thanks for any input.

For one, you can pose the question to your student hosts to introduce you to some of their friends. Let them know of your situation and I'm sure they will be more than willing to accommodate, otherwise they wouldn't agree to host students. Alternatively you can post in the school specific thread to ask current med students. Sometimes they still peruse the current applicant thread.

You know, med students are just people too. Just ask them while you're there on the school tour or email the admissions office before hand.

This is something that I did a few times last year. I think it would be weird if you took time during the interview day to speak to someone, but meeting a student for dinner and talking to them the night before about the school would be a good idea. I would suggest posting in either the school-specific thread or e-mailing the admissions office and asking if they might be able to connect you with someone.

I'd say have some fun in the city your visiting (unless it is a ****ty city) but that's just me.

You could always try the school specific forum.

was considering this, but for some reason, I would rather not meet up via an open internet forum if there is another, better way out there.

Why not just pm a current med student that posts in that school-specific forum? From there you could ask questions and probably meet if you're both okay with it. That is, unless you have something to hide? :meanie:

This was what I was getting out. I routinely meet with pre-meds interviewing at my school via SDN.

Hmm, okay thanks guys. Besides the boil under my left eye, I have nothing to hide 🙂. I appreciate the advice.
