My pop and I worked on cars a lot and he talked about when he was a boy there was a flight surgeon who came up to him when he was working on a lawnmower. The doctor said that he said being a mechanic is harder because it doesn't heal on its own. At least with a human you can patch them up and then the body has a natural capacity to heal itself

I mean I would absolutely say being a physician is harder haha... But just an interesting story

If you've ever listened to car talk you'd know the nature of these guys.

Having worked on engines, there's almost no difference between the two. A good mechanic uses the same logic as a doctor.

My father transitioned from autos to healthcare and we always say that the two jobs are incredibly similar.

Yes, I'm sure the nature of the job is very similar. Although when a car dies, you know, you can get brand new parts, or get a new one... Just sayin'.

FYI: "Car Talk" is/was largely a comedy show, albeit with some useful car information. Take the Tappet Brothers with a grain of salt.

Maybe it's just me but it seemed pretty tongue in cheek between car enthusiasts. I don't think they believe they are actually smarter or better than doctors.

As a former mechanic this is false. It requires some basic and sometimes complex problem solving skills but it is much lower stress, lower stakes, and a smaller knowledge base than doctoring. And if you aren't sure you can always "throw parts at it" as a mechanic, not so much as a doc.

I would venture to say being a mechanic is easier because there is a definite right and wrong way to do things. People built cars, we know how they work, we know the things that can go wrong, and we know how to go about fixing things. The human body is still largely a mystery- there is not mechanic's manual for the human body, and even with the thousands of books and millions of articles we have published on the subject, we are still largely in the dark as to how so many disease processes work. Worse yet, we don't have the drugs, treatments, or surgeries available to fix many conditions, while mechanics can always buy a new part for whatever happens to break.
