Hi! I have been recently browsing Emergency Medicine as a potential career and wanted to hear some thoughts about what I can do from here to improve my profile over the next 1.5 years if I choose to apply!

TL;DR MS2 interested in EM and looking for perspectives on how I'm currently doing, what can be changed, etc.

I am just about ready to start MS2 at a solid state school on the west coast (will not reveal due to anonymity).

A little about me:
-MS1 grades were decent, with honors (90+ or top 10-20%) in 5 of 8 courses

-Doing my best to set myself up well for Step 1 at the end of MS2. I read FA, pathoma, sketchy/etc and make relevant flashcards. Trying to start review older material from the school year so that I'm relatively sharp before dedicated, and I try to do Qbank questions when I can (starting a few days ago, I am doing questions daily 4-5x/wk).

-I am involved in research: 1 publication during MS1 (from undergrad work, non-EM), and 5-7 international projects in progress (I will be first author on perhaps 5 all said and done, with all papers hopefully published over the next 2 years), 1 healthcare quality project (will be first author), and I've been trying to get a research project done at my Ophtho program (also potentially interested in that field), but it's been shaky since it's clinical and it's tough for the docs to take time and enroll participants (since I cannot enroll on days I'm not there). Should I be pursuing EM research? Or is that not a necessity? I'd like to stay on the west coast for residency.

-Involved in extracurriculars, but not really at my school. As I said earlier, I'd love to pursue global health, so I've been heavily involved in that, and I founded a nonprofit that works in developing countries (will not provide details, again due to anonymity).

So, what else can I do to prepare an application for EM? Any advice would be fabulous, and criticisms too!

If you are interested in doing research in the long run try to get involve in EM research otherwise i dont think EM PDs are going to care that much, probably its better to focus on your EM rotations.

Do well on Step 1.
Do well on step 2.
Honor your home EM rotation.
Honor your Sub I away EM rotations.

Be interested
Be friendly
Don't be a dick
Be punctual

Be interested but don't be annoying and don't be weird or fake. Striking this balance is actually one of the hardest parts of med school, especially because you often have so little info about what's happening to your patients.
