Im a medical student and Pharmacist (Mpharm UK), worked 2 years in retail pharmacy, decided it was not for me, entered medical school (UK Bart's in Gozo which is located in Malta) 4 years of clinical rounds and work in the field and after travelling to Chang Mai (thailand) + Tokyo, where i met countless digital nomads i have decided to leave the medical profession and move onto digital nomad/telemedicine lifestyle maybe opening my own business

who ealse feels that travel is more important then working 58hrs a week and having no life

maybe get my MD and just use it to teach medical students could be an option

Seems like you spent a lot of years and a lot of dollars on things you want to throw away. I’d be very careful on your choices, cause it sounds like you’ve jumped into things before you

As an MD, you are a lot more marketable once you can get a medical license. And much more marketable if you are board certified.

How much debt do you have? Can you afford to walk away on a career that is well paying?

Should have gone into tech, it's so hot right now. There are a good amount of people that work remotely, traveling here and there, and still making decent bank.

What about doing telemedicine after completing residency in FM? It's become quite popular and you'd be able to support yourself really well living in SE Asia and doing consults from your cell / laptop.

I'm smelling a troll. Medical student and many years of clinical rounds? That can't be right.

Took 9 comments to figure out this is a troll. I'm disappointed sdn.

Taking the question at its face, there are opportunities to do things like telehealth which allow for this kind of lifestyle, depending on what kind of specialty you live in. One of my residency classmates doesn't have a job lined up (we finish in a week) and plans on traveling the world for several months. He plans to continue doing that even when working, so he's specifically looking for jobs that will fit with this kind of lifestyle.

For some fields this isn't feasible. You can't be a "digital nomad" as a surgeon - at least not yet. But for some other fields and/or in some non-traditional, possibly non-clinical career paths, this is certainly possible. You'll just have to go off the beaten path to figure out what will work.

I worked 2 years full time in the UK, saved up 60,000 euros as i worked weekends/locums and fulltime shifts. literally had no life. I went to Barts medical school in Gozo (malta) accomodation is free. having an Mpharm i worked partime evenings repping with a medical company on the island. so i managed to save 25,000 euros. No debt

financially im not great. but i think i can graduate debt free.

You jumped ship from pharmacy to medicine. And now from medicine to something else.

What is really going to make you happy?

i find i like to work on my own schedule. when i started to locum as a pharmacist i realized you dont need to work for a boss. you can set your own hours. and that made realize why on earth i had gone into med school. honestly i did it because i wanted to use my skills in a more patient centered approach. but in medicine im seeing alot of Red tape, loads on hours wasted and no social life. i realized i either loose my social life, wife, friends relatives and just bust my ass working shifts as a foundation doctor or quit and try live a decent life style. in my opinion life is short so i want to live it. i dont expect luxury even a 1 room apartment makes me happy 🙂

in my opinion although we study medicine as doctors we should not neglect the digital revolution, many docs i personally know lack digital skills and cant handle simple tasks. big time waster. plus most of the work is done on laptops, tablets and computer systems using software packages.

Lmfao “digital nomad” :hilarious:

id like to see you enjoy working in ER for 4 weeks straight and not seeing your wife and kids after 1 month, and getting shouted at and pissed on by patients. bro consider lifestyle !

The only people who do that are people who want to do it.

100,000% this. Have dreams of working 6 months out of the year and travelling/mountain bike racing/rock climbing the other half. Telepsych is the goal with some cash only OMM on the side.

Sounds like you should really consider finishing your MD so that you can make the most out of practicing telemedicine. Stick it out for a few more years to set yourself up for the lifestyle you know you'll really enjoy!

Check out Dr. Mo at Sustainable Medicine, he’s on that nomadic lifestyle. Basically he practices telemedicine.
