Hey guys, so I have a question 4 ya all =]

So, when you fill out the AMCAS work/activities part, do you have to leave any contact info about your activities? Let say, if I shadowed a doc, so a volunteer, then do I have to put down the phone number of the doc and the volunteer coordinator? What if I lost the number of the volunteer coordinator of the volunteering I did, say, in my freshmen year?

No, just put in contact name and title. Numbers aren't asked for nor do I think they are necessary.
 
If you are able to put in specific contact information like an e-mail or phone number/ext., I would do so at the end of the narrative portion. If you lost the specific contact info for a person, although you've already put in their name and institution, you can look up an address to add. The more verifiable your information is, the better. As most people provide such contact data, it will look odd if you don't.

Chubby, just for my reference, is there a spot on the AMCAS for contact information? I'm a year away from doing any of that kind of stuff but the CommonApp for Undergrad and UF's JHMP application were structured like this:


Name/Type of Activity: Dates of Activity:

Description of Activity:


Is it the same for the AMCAS (ie no space where you're supposed to put supervisor information, etc)?
 
If you are able to put in specific contact information like an e-mail or phone number/ext., I would do so at the end of the narrative portion. If you lost the specific contact info for a person, although you've already put in their name and institution, you can look up an address to add. The more verifiable your information is, the better. As most people provide such contact data, it will look odd if you don't.

i was not under the impression that most people provided this data. even if most people do, i'm not going to. i think it's unnecessary. as i understand it, adcoms don't really have time to go through and call people's supervisors anyway. i think having to put down a name just adds an extra layer of accountability... yes, it's still possible for people to lie, but i feel like this would make it less likely. :shrug: JMO.

There is a spot but its not necesary if you dont know it. Some of my activities i have no idea who my boss was or if they are still even there. If its blank its not really the end of the world.

there is a space to put the name and institution, but no phone number or address or anything is mandatory.

damn, elijah beat me to it! you get the point, though.

Name and Title is the only thing they have a dedicated space for...I guess you could put moer in the description if you wanted.

👍 Agree. I'm not really sure what the purpose would be. If Adcoms think you're BSing them; you've got bigger problems. And if they just want to call up my work-study supervisor for a chat, then they'll have to go to the phonebook.

Mattabet: "What do I look like, the effing internet? *Sigh* ...'teach a man to fish'... Okay, you pick up the laptop, you open to google, you search 'white pages' and then you put in Foley's name. Just to clarify, I applied to be a doctor; not to do your job, *******."

My experience disagrees with your observation. From peer conversations and from reading SDN, it seems most applicants do provide detailed contact information. Exactly how do you think this will hurt you? It can only serve to make the information you've provided more believable.

If we are extraordinarily lucky, LizzyM might weigh in on the issue, as she's read more AMCAS applications as an adcomm than any of us.

You need not provide anything beyond what is requested in the specific fields (contact person's name & title). The deans of admission know how to use google and they will use if they think that the information that you've provided is wonky. (It doesn't happen often - less than 1 in 1,000 and when it does it is usually after interview.)
