So this is round 2 of applying to doctorate programs for me. I'm reapplying to my top choice emory. I had an interview there and my POI said they really liked me and were just waiting on funding info. The funding did not come(we were at the peak of an economic crisis pre-bailout), so I did not get in. As I reapply I'm wondering if it would be acceptable/beneficial to shoot her an email and notify her that i'm reapplying. Now, she'd likely recognize my app. when she saw it as she did invite me for an interview last year, but this way I'm just able to touch base with her, not to make it sound in anyway like i expect an automatic interview spot, but simply just to reconnect with her. Good idea? bad idea? any thoughts? Thanks!

I'd send her a friendly (and professional, of course) little email. It can't hurt, and it'll mean she's expecting your application as opposed to being confused about it. 🙂 Good luck.

I would say definitely e-mail her, at least to reconnect. She'll probably appreciate the gesture, and that way she can keep an eye out for your application and be a spokesperson for you. 🙂

I emailed one of the profs I interviewed with last year to tell her I was interested in reapplying and I basically said: hi, found myself reapplying this year, really liked your program/lab/research last year and I'd be interested in working with you if you're taking students again this year. I got a pretty favorable response, even though it turns out she's not taking students this year.

when reapplying to the same school it's really important to emphasize what you've added to your application... e.g. a publication, an RA job. maybe touch on what you've been doing since last year when you applied.
