Hey guys this is my first post on SDN I've just been reading a lot and getting a feel for the site. I'm currently finishing up my fall semester in a post bach program with georgetown and george mason aka ABS it is the cousin to the georgetown SMP. I have the option of continuing into the SMP and finishing it in one semester after my spring semester of the ABS program. I'm not sure if this is necessary for me.
The main reason I am in the ABS program in the first place is because of my low undergrad GPA from Virginia Tech. Double major in Psychology (3.17) and Biology (2.72) and an overall of 2.96. I've been working in my dad's dental office since I was 13 and I recently spent a year working for an IT support company that works with lots of dentists in the VA/DC/MD area. I've got plenty of volunteer experience as well. I'm getting all A's and B's right now in the ABS program and will hopefully end up with all A's and one B in biochem probably. Haven't taken the DAT yet but I will be submitting my applications from day one and will be finishing my DAT at the end of July. What do you guys think? First time i'm really throwing this all out there so go easy, thanks guys! 👍

Either my chances of getting in are that bad orrrr tomorrow is Dec 1st haha
but really what do you guys think of my position?

there is no doubt that good grades in the post bacc will help. you just need to make sure you stick with it. kick butt on DAT and prove that you want to go through dental school and become a dentist...

and yes.. dec 1st is near. hehe

Continue. You need all the help you can get, esp if it's just one more semester and not holding you back from anything (ie starting dental school). Until you get an acceptance, your mission should be to finish strong w/ the M.S. degree and do well on DAT.

I hear you guys. It would just set me back an extra year, I will be applying to the next cycle regardless if I choose to do the M.S. in physiology. A masters in physiology should be really helpful in dental school as well, I hear the first year anatomy course is a killer. Next semester we have Physiology (5credit) and Anatomy (3credit) all taught at georgetown med level. You guys are both correct though, get A's in the ABS program, 20+ on DAT, and I know i'll interview well already. Thanks for the replies 🙂

Can someone tell me how Dental schools combine undergrad gpas with grad school gpas such as the certificate program I'm doing?

Hey, I'm a student in the G2SMP! We've got two pre-dent students in our class. I know this is stressed a lot about SMP's here on SDN, but keep in mind that it is unbelievably HARD to get A's in any of the Georgetown classes. If there's any chance you don't have to, don't do it because it's highly risky.
Put as much effort as you can into getting in this cycle.

As far as I know, med. schools consider undergrad and grad gpas separately, I'm pretty sure that dental schools do the same.

Hope this helps!

I strongly recommend you to make an appointment with Dr. Healy from VCU. Go to VCU and see him in person. He is really nice.

I've actually met with him on multiple occasions while I was at VT and he is such a helpful resource! He basically told me the same thing, do a graduate program, knock the dat out and I should be good. Seeing as how it would only take me one semester to get the Masters after this ABS program I think it would be worth it. Especially since I could still enter dental school in 2013. Thanks for all your comments guys.
