So a Dr I'm doing some research with wants me to attend a big conference/convention that he's presenting at. I won't be presenting, and I'm not even involved in the project he's talking about so I'll be going as a spectator only. I was wondering what is common attire for one of these things? Shirt and tie? Suit? Thanks for input, never been to something like this before.

You can't go wrong with business casual. Bring a tie if you want to be on the safe side, but I doubt you'd feel out of place without it. If it were me I'd sport a jacket/no tie, but a collar is all you need.

People wear everything and anything at these big conferences. I've seen guys in suits and ties sitting next to guys in jeans and a slightly rumpled t-shirt. (Of course rumpled t-shirt was a big name in the field so maybe he gets a pass...).

The more dressed up types seem to be the presenters. You're fine in a collared shirt and pants.

This is exactly right. The day I do a presentation I normally wear something nice (i.e. a button down shirt and nice pants). Every other day it's jeans and a t-shirt or sweater if its cold. The guys wandering around in suits tend to be Vendor/Industry employees.
