Wow, no responses?? 😱 That's surprising, I've got a friend who's coptic, and almost EVERYONE in her church is a doc or future doc.

Ok, let me ask a stupid question: what are Coptic othodox Christians?

As far as I know there are two main types, the Greek Orthodox and the Russian Orthodox. The majority of Ethiopians are also Coptic Orthodox Christians. It is one of the oldest denominations of christianity, and amonst those with the longest and richest of historical and religious traditions- I guess for a better way to describe it. It is quite similar to the Catholic church in its practice and traditions.

To the OP; I was baptised in the Coptic Orthodox church at the age of 7 because my Dad suddenly decided it was important (he is ethiopian, and so belongs to the religion), but I can't claim to be one in the least... sorry!

ok, thanks, so I learn something new every day 👍

Greek Orthodox is not the same as coptic orthodox, although they are very close. I have a friend who is coptic orthodox who is Egyptian... It is Christianity, similar to catholism with some minor differences (uses a different calendar, so some holidays are different- i.e.- Easter falls on a different day than most other Christian religions) Thats about all I know about it...

I wish i knew a lot about my own religion but i really don't... but its interesting reading your posts 🙂

If you are interested this is a description of the Coptic Orthodox Religion..

The Coptic Orthodox church is an Oriental Orthodox church. It is in the same category as the Armenian Orthodox church. It is not a part of the Eastern Orthodox church, that includes the patriarchates of Antioch, Jerusalem, Alexandria, Constantinople (which represents the Greeks), Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania, Georgia, Albania, Poland, and Russia.

In this light, the Coptic church has a Pope (Shenouda), and the Armenian church has a Katholikos, rather than Eastern Orthodox patriarchs.

The Copts are the sole descendants of the ancient Egyptians!!! They are persecuted by their Arab Muslim conquerors. The speak their own language in Church, descended from ancient Egyptian, but there are many who only know Arabic or the language of the country in which they live. The Coptic alphabet is derived from Greek. The Copts were the first Christians to begin monasticism, theirs is the first Christian monastery in the world.

If you would enjoy reading about Copts, consider reading "The Alexandria Quartet" by Lawrence Durrell. This set of four books is a literary masterpiece, and it discusses, among other things, Greeks, Copts, Jews, and others in Alexandria.

It should be pointed out that there is both a Coptic Orthodox church, whose adherents may be of a variety of ethnicities, including Ethiopian, and that there is a Coptic ethnicity, which is, as previously pointed out, descended of the ancient Egyptians.

I hope you are not incorrectly implying that the copts are the ONLY descendants of the ancient Egyptians. From what I rememember, Christians as a whole make up less than 5% of the Egyptian population. So where did the other 95% of egyptians descend from? Alexander ?

They came from Arabia in the 7th century. Arabic and Egyptian are not even in the same branches of the Hamito-Semitic family. I will allow that assimilation occurred, but quite simply, modern Egyptians are not the cultural descendants of the ancient Egyptians in any possible way.

Just as the original peoples of Iraq are the now-persecuted Christians, the Assyrians and Chaldeans.

You cannot go around saying that copts are persecuted. This is a very general statement, and as of my personal experience not true. I spen one month every year in Egypt, and I have coptic friends as well as muslim friends, everyone gets along, and there is no persecution, not even discrimination. That is, I am not saying that these things never happen, but you are trying to make it sound like all christians are persecuted in muslim countries the way that blacks African-Americans were persecuted in the USA (pre-1960s). This will not help anyones understanding of the Coptic religion or culture, all it does it further your agenda (whatever that may be). Please think before you speak because people are on this forum to learn and hear advice from others and when you make a statement like that, it doesnt help. Furthermore, Copts comprise about 10% of the total Egyptian population, and have the same freedoms as their muslim counterparts (granted they must get government permission for building churches, but who doesnt need govt permission when building?). The epiphany is a very important holiday for the copts, and it is a national holiday in Egypt (Jan. 6 or 7). Can the USA say that the feast after ramadan is a national holiday? Can any other country claim fairness like this? If so, that country must be applauded, because baby steps like these are what help create assimilation of cultural differences and destruction of social stratification. Take care and God Bless.
