So when I copy and paste the personal statement into the online app, even though it says it's 500 words in Word, it shows up as 1596 words when I paste it😕

How do I get rid of those 'hidden characters' to avoid this problem?

Do you think that maybe in word you count only the words instead of characters ? I think the only way to explain why its 3x the amount of words in online application is to think assume that they count characters and not words. Go to file menu, click on properties- then statistics - that should show you the characters in your essay.

Maybe try using a different browser. I know that the word count changed for PharmCAS depending on whether I used Firefox or Internet Explorer. It was only a few words though and I don't know how to explain the big jump.

Pharmcas uses amount of characters, and I believe that only Word 2007 has a customizable character count (which appears on the bottom "toolbar" near the left. I don't remember too much of the previous version. You can switch between word and character count there with a right click.)

Another way, in Word 2007, is the Home tab, Paragraph group, click the "Show/Hide Formatting" button. This looks like a paragraph mark, which is basically a backwards P. It might show something you don't see. I don't know how to do this in the previous versions, but I know that the capability is there and should be similar.

😀 Good luck....

You can try copying your file to a Wordpad/Notepad file that will take out most of the Word specific formatting. Then, you could transfer it to PharmCAS. You'll have to know how it works out as I haven't tried it before.

If you're talking about PharmCAS then you should be worrying about characters, not words. And I believe in both Word 2003 and 2007 you should be able to see both the number of characters with and without spaces. There shouldn't be any problems with hidden characters (at least I didn't have any) when pasting. The number of characters that Word had counted was the same number that PharmCAS counted when I pasted it so it worked out for me.

Thanks guys- Yeah I think I need to cut my essay in half!
