Why is Cornell more of a risk than Michigan? What's this risk?

i think the way i phrased it implied that it's more of a risk in general, which i don't mean! for me personally, the college environment and the curriculum at michigan are much more familiar to me and i know i would be fine there. NYC and PBL are things i'm really excited about and am fairly sure will be positive for me, but i feel like there's a chance that the city could get overwhelming or i might not love PBL as much as i think. so that's what i mean by it being a "risk." kinda make sense?

anyway i've decided that it's worth the "risk" that i've made it to be in my mind...and i'm super excited to be going there in the fall! go red! 😍

Congrats! I will see you then!!!!

Hey so where are all the cornell folks?

hey guys...now that we're all heading to the same place, i think it's time we became facebook friends! 🙂 PM me and i'll give you my name so you can add me! yay!

random unrelated question - anyone know how orientation works? white coat is on a wednesday...when are cAMP and urban adventure in relation to that? i think i'd probably do cAMP! i'm not very outdoorsy but i want to be 😛

I am outdoorsey. I might do the urban adventure because it is later. I have a daughter. I want to be with her longer.

Sweet, were you at either revisits?

hey guys, i just got off the waitlist, but have a really tough decision between a cali school (i'm from cali) and cornell. will let you guys know how it goes...you all seem so excited about going in the fall it makes it seem kinda hard to pass up! awesome.

come join us! cornell is winning over quite a few of us californians. 🙂

Cornell is neat. I chose it over alot if places too.

It is so hard because Cornell essentially seems like the same program as UCLA (my other choice), except it has fancier equipment and more money...
Any thoughts? I know its a personal decision, but I honestly didn't have the best interview day there (I had two back to back and was really tired) and it was back in October, so I don't remember a lot of it anyway). Thanks so much guys!

I don't know anything about UCLA. I only applied in the midwest and east coast. I like the accessibility to labs at Rockefeller and Sloan Kettering and time to do research. I like the great match list. NYC is not as cold as many of the northern states (I grew up in Michigan and Minn). I loved te neighborhood, but I will tell you the first time I came out east I was in culture shock for 1 month. It moves and can be overwhelming. Now I love it and you couldn't get me to leave. I left kicking and screaming and had a fit. I am interested in derm and path and their derm and path matches year after year are awesome.

Hey blueray, I got your PM and I will send you one back when I have a little more time at work to elaborate on how I decided. And yeah I was at the UCLA 2nd look, so chances are we probably met.

Hey got the email today that our stuff is coming in the mail. It is official.

Okay blueray - I chose Cornell because I loved the feel I got from the student body and the administration (see my second look recap). I chose it over many schools and don't regret it becasue I feel like I can get the best of both worlds. I like doing research and they obviously have limitless opportunities and I liked the feel of the school PLUS it help that we get out of class at 1PM everyday!

thanks so much all you guys, you've really been helpful. i am starting to lean... 🙂

So how many are coming to Cornell? Anyone on Cornell waitlist?

Already done that 🙂 I sent them updates in February, an LOI declaring my love for them, and recently e-mailed Ms. Montano with my semester grades and re-emphasizing that I will matriculate if accepted. All I can do now is wait 🙂

New York City here I come!

yay Rebs! btw i just bought a Time Out NYC guide book at B&N the other day...and i even lived in NYC one summer and have visited numerous times! i just like being cheesy and learning lots about the different neighborhoods and boroughs. and of course, having a great guide to the best nightlife 😉

who's going out with me the first week in denial of PBL homework and studying?! 😍

i like the direction this thread is headed
i think somewhere2010 is my favorite poster on the boards of late (i will definately be joining you in your social conquest of the upper east side!)

anyways, long-time reader, none-too-often poster here - but i also got off the Cornell waitlist on the 12th and am ridiculously psyched to start living and learning in Manhattan
i assume us waitlister-acceptees will have to wait our due time to get fin. aid. packages and housing info - but have any of yall heard what the earliest we can move in is?
and anyone have plans for gyms, musuem, etc. memberships in the area? I was looking at the 92nd st. Y and it looks sweet but might be a little far (30ish blocks) in the dead of winter

(for those who were interested in general before, i actually never got around to sending in any updates or LOI to any schools, and my numbers are around the averages for cornell - higher mcat but lower gpa - so theres that info for whatever it is worth)

Somewhere2010 I will definitlely need you as my tour guide, because chances are I will probably spend at least the first month lost in Manhattan. However, I'm stoked on living in NYC!! As far as ducking out on homework to go out, you don't have to ask me twice...I am down for the cause.

hi future classmates! i'm new to this but i finally decided on cornell after alot of serious thinking..this decision is just as exciting as scary!

i'm a true californian native leaving for the NYC..is anyone else in the same boat?

also, for move in into olin hall, i believe you can move in by the 17th of aug if you do the camping orientation. otherwise for the urban experience, it's the 18th.

Cornell seems to be trolling the CA resident pool for all of its students. I'm another California resident (though I've only been here in SF for the last year establishing residence for CA schools... seems like that was a good idea, eh?). Anyone want to see what we can do to establish a surfing community on the East River?

Hi classmates! Cornell is going to be awesome, I will be there. I'm ready to party it up... East village and the Lower Eastside is super fun, nothing too cool on the upper eastside. I wonder if showing up at 8am PBL lectures hung over is a bad thing...probably.

ohhh the village is so much fun! i lived and worked by washington square park (NYU!!) one summer and love hanging out in that area! though for free dancing nearby, vudu lounge is a cool spot - that's where we went for minority revisit, and oddly enough i'd been there once when i was like 18 😳

as for orientation and move-in stuff, i emailed ms. montano, who said that camp starts the 18th, urban stuff starts the 20th, there's a "traditional evening boat cruise" the 21st, and white coat on the 22nd!

You sound like the right person to talk to, because I'm thinking the same thing. Since I'm leaving the beach in San Diego for the iron-jungle in NYC, I think a bit of home sounds good. I don't think the East River catches too many good swells, but maybe Cornell will put some money up and build us a wave pool...Also the other thing I can't live without is snowboarding, and although its no Mammoth or Tahoe, there are some other decent spots nearby.

Lived in Southern California my entire life, but I'm stoked on living in NYC!! Even had the chance to stay here, but the opportunity to live in the Center of the World was too much to pass up.

Hey Guys! I too will be joining you in the fun for NYC. My dad wants to come to the white coat ceremony!! I am certainly geeked. Remember waitlisters. I had friends come off the wiatlist all the way until the first week of August. Seriously--even at Cornell!!!

I can't think of a single good reason this wouldn't happen. It appears as though our class will continue Cornell's long tradition of innovation

Hi rascalking,
I think the 92nd street thing might be a hard pull at times. Have you looked into Eqinox. There's one 63rd and Lexington. You should see if Cornell has a discount for that gym. It's beautiful and has all the facilities you can think of.

Hey Rebs, Glad to hear you're on board!!

Hey everyone! I'll be joining you too. I delayed this decision up to the last possible moment, but I'm really excited. I'm originally from San Francisco so I can definitely provide moral support*/winter clothing advice for everyone moving from California, but I've been living in NYC for the past 4 years so I'm also looking forward to offering my tour-guide services to any and all new arrivals. Anyone interested in living off campus with questions about neighborhoods/apartment hunting can throw those my way too... though I confess not to be an expert on the UES.

Can't wait to meet you guys!

*like, for example, after your first time visiting a NYC "beach"

Excellent

Just thought you guys might want a taste of our (new) home...

there is a gym (NYHRC) @ 65th and York that has a hospital affiliate deal

both the gyms in lasdon and olin have been completely renovated, and the basketball court will be as well. both aren't huge, but i've hardly ever found them to be full, even at peak hours.

i heart that picture Rebs! it's hard to believe that's where we'll be spending the next 4 years!

i've had a picture of central park on my work computer for a while now and one of the brooklyn bridge on my laptop 🙂 yay NYC!
