CORNELL HOUSING 1st year.. Help

So for the surviving Cornell Students- I'll be glad if you guys can help me out with a couple of questions about living in Olin.
1. What floor has the best rooms? why
2. Is there any difference between the smoking and non-smoking floors? (apart from "duh, one is smoking the other is not).
3. Can I bring my own bed? (plus its a futon so can be folded if needed)
4. Best view, floors with kitchen?
5. Any good housing options for 1st years?
6. Personal thoughts on Housing?
7. Things you wished you had done- concerning housing (esp 1st year -but not limited to 1st yr housing).

Plus, I am hoping to move in before August - when can I start to contact housing to check for avaiable rooms.
oh last question - 8. what floors in olin for med. student does have the setup with the 2 single rooms not connected directly to the bathroom?

The most efficient way to answer your questions is to access a student directory through Cornell and contact other Cornell students directly. You can send a group e-mail and see who responds.

well I looking for some1 to give a good input here. I read the packet already but I'm not totally satisfied - so that is why I pose those questions.
I dont want to bend any of the students arms by calling them up or mass emailing. Hopefully, they can answer here.
but if no body answers- Oh well.

When do we receive this information packet? I just sent back the form that said I needed single housing. What is this about choosing a floor?

I'm probably not the best person to answer your questions, as I'm married and lived in Lasdon my first year, but I'll try to help you out from what I've seen as a visitor to Olin...

1)From what I've seen, all of the rooms are identical: two rooms joined by a bathroom. I haven't heard any talk about "better" or "worse" rooms, with the exception of how much street noise you get. The street is on the east and south side of the building, so west and north generally have less noise (although this no longer holds true, as they're doing tons of building and maintenance in the area, and everything is extremely noisy right now). Also, higher is generally quieter, but as we're all on the block of the emergency room, there's still lots of sirens all the time.

2) I don't know if there's a difference between smoking and nonsmoking. Most of my classmates are nonsmokers (I think only 3 smoke, and 1 of those lives off campus).

3)Yes, you can bring your own bed. One of my classmates even had a waterbed. 🙂 You'll want something small, though, because the rooms are small.

4) View is pretty negligible from all Olin floors, as everything around it is taller. The same goes for Livingston-Farrand. Lasdon, on the other hand, is different--the view of downtown Manhattan is quite nice on the south side (although the sun heart can be unbearable, I've heard), if you're above the 9th floor or so. I'm on the 15th floor on the north side of Lasdon, and we get TONS of light.
Regarding a kitchen, I'm pretty sure all housing floors in Olin have a kitchen.
5) No. 🙂 I have classmates who lived off campus first year, but housing around here is notoriously expensive, and to get anything cheaper you have to live a ways away. The housing office can be a pain to work with, but you get a lot more for your money in Cornell housing--although it's certainly not cheap.
6) Be nice to Housing. There will be no love for you if you get upset with them, and you will definitely regret it!
7) Before you move into your second year housing, look at the carpet. Make sure they replace it if it needs to be done (we didn't see our housing before arriving in Manhattan with Uhaul, and it really needs new carpet. Our neighbor, though, saw their nasty carpet prior to moving in, and they talked housing into replacing it).

Rent is what, $350 for living in the Upper East Side. Sweet deal. You can't go wrong in any campus room.
