What is an upper-level biology class that is considered to be not too difficult to do well in or get an A?

thanks

BioMI290-Microbio
BioBM331-332-Biochem
BioBM440-Molecular/Biochem lab

Pretty much any of them except for genetics.

It's easy to get an A in biochem?!?

no, it isn't. not the autotutorial

there are much easier classes to get a's in.

Don't know which school you go to, but gettingtop marks in Microbio or Biochem is not easy. If you want an easy A in a science course, take Intro. Stats or something. Organic chem 1 is not that bad; it has a bad rep but that's because people don't know how to study for it.

He goes to Cornell, obviously.

micro is pretty easy, and the lab is interesting but involving. genetics will eat your life, and biochem is competitive. when i was there 2 years ago, they had a couple of upper level cell bio classes that were really not bad at all. most major specific upper level courses with smallish enrollment will give you a much better chance of finishing with an a than large classes that attract a lot of premed attention.

I attend Cornell College in Iowa 🙄

Last I checked neither intro stats nor organic chem qualifies as an "upper-level biology course."

So genetics is like that everywhere huh? I have made straight A's in every science course but genetics where I got a B. I'm taking molecular in the fall, and I hear that one sucks alot too.

(Assuming you're talking about Cornell University)

BIOMI 290 was easy, but the quizzes were annoying.
BIOBM 330 is curved nicely, but you will have to study diligently.
BIOMI 404 had reasonable take-home exams.

I've yet to take BIOGD 281 :scared:

I love your MCAT subscores 🙂

I should add, though, that there aren't really any "easy" bio classes at Cornell. Rather, there are the classes that are just "much less frustrating" than most.

Is BIOBM331 (Principles in Biochemistry: Proteins and Metabolism) a full-year course?

No. It's taken in sequence (or out of sequence) w/ BioBM332.

How's the professor? Interesting class? I've taken an intro biochem class and want to continue on within the subject matter. I don't want to take the autotutorial cause I don't learn as well that way (had problems with Physics 101).

Feigenson, if he's still teaching 331, is excellent. Definitely an interesting guy who cares a lot about his students. I had Tye for 332 and she is not very good. What intro biochem class have you taken? I thought 330, 331, 332 were intro biochem lol

Thanks. Yes I am referring to Cornell University not Cornell College in Iowa, lol

you receive a course packet and text book and basically learn a syllabus without a formal lecture. they have a student center that's open during certain times of the day where you can talk to a TA, and once a week there is a question session that kind of resembles a regular lecture. you have to take unit quizzes every few days, and you are only allowed a certain amount of failures on these quizzes before it impacts your semester grade.

it's an interesting way of taking the class, but it may not be for everyone. i did it during orgo II and at the end it was a little more than i wanted to be doing.

Oh I see. thanks

Also I'd appreciate any suggestions for any class that qualifies as BCPM (not just upper-level bio classes)

thanks

if you like math, try CHEME 402, Cellular Princ. of BioEng. The prof is great, he's a real bright guy, already on the NIH grant review committee in his mid 30s.

BEE 489 was real easy (no math but i don't know if they're still offering it though)

BEE 360 was also pretty easy, only a little math but no calc

all of those classes passed through AMCAS as bio and were part of my BCPM gpa, if you were worried

PL BR 225 Plant Genetics is a really easy class
I got an A+ in it...and I did very little work
its 4 credits, but only 2 if you take it after 281

and the best part is.....no premeds

Do not take the autotutorial Biochemistry class. Take the lecture sequence. Even though it's more credits, you'll do about half the work and get a higher grade.

Took the intro class at another university. Has anybody taken the Basic Immunology class BIO G305? How is it?

I thought Biochem is much more difficult then genetic, maybe just because I am more math-oriented kind of person

Thanks everyone!

Anymore suggestions? Also I hate add/drop here =(

Try BioNB221, Intro to Behavior. It's not really upper-level, but it was one of the more interesting classes I have taken here.

Thanks! Do you know how the grading is in that class? I am scared of intro classes because I am worried that they grade really tough.

On the other hand, has anyone here taken BIOAP 214 and if so how was it?

Thanks

Do a search through the Cornell website for "median grade report". You should find all your answers about the grades for the class there.

I think BioNB221 is curved to a B, but it's one of the easier Bio courses I have taken in terms of test difficulty. I'd put in on the same level as BioEE278.

Medical parasitology is also supposed to be really easy to get a good grade in. I didn't take that course, but I took general parasitology with the same professor, and it was pretty easy.

My favorite undergrad class ever was Medical Parasitology with Dr. Bowman. It was super easy and really entertaining. Its been a few years for me but I think it was BIOMI 441 or something. Seriously though great class👍

do premeds have to take upper division bio classes?
