Hey guys . . .

I was just wondering if anyone had any information regarding the waitlist at Cornell. Does anyone know how many people are on it?? What are the chances of getting off of it? Any tips as to how to get off it??? Is it easier/harder to get off than Columbia's??? I'm on the waitlist at both schools, and would love to be in NYC next year . . . any suggestions/info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!🙂
 
First off, gotta give you props for your name - best I've seen on SDN. :laugh: :laugh:

I'm on the waitlist with you at Cornell - here's what I know:

Maybe the dean told you this when you were there interviewing, but apparently Cornell overbooked their class a couple of years ago, so now they're extra carefull with the number of kids they accept, and rely more on the waitlist than normal.

Also, one of the students I was talking with at Cornell told me not to worry too much if I was put on the waitlist. He said he was originally put on the waitlist, but kept "bugging" them with calls and visits(apparently he lived in NYC) - and eventually they let him in. Lesson = Persistance pays off.

Fill me in if you hear anything else. If all goes well, maybe we'll be classmates come fall.
 
also, just a little tidbit to pass along. when i talked to gladys (the fin aid lady at cornell, really nice lady), she said no matter how late one gets in of the wl, it wont affect your eligibility for need based grants (thanks to all the dough from cornell benefactors 😉 )
I would encourage you if you're planning to stay on the cornell waitlist to at least start (but dont submit) the needs access if you havent already for other schools, cause this thing is a beotch and cant be done in one sitting.

A friend of mine got in off the waitlist in July....he didn't do anything to express his interest though 🙂 I sent in a letter with my waitlist response, but that may be all I do. We'll see.

But I hope I get in! I love Cornell! 🙂 🙂

Interesting story:

So I called the admissions office to get the email address of one of my interviewers. It was a great interview and I wanted to write him and ask him for some advice on getting off the waitlist. Anyways, here's how the phone conversation with admissions gets weird:

Admissions: Hello, Office of Admissions.

Me: Hi. I came up there to interview earlier this year and I was wondering if I could get the email address for one of my interv--

Admissions: --That's illegal. You canNot contact your interviewers unless you have been accepted.

Me: (shocked that she cut me off) huh? Well...ah.. I was just going to ask him about what steps I can take at this point to convey my interest in Cornell to the admission committ---

Admissions: --Doesn't matter. You CANNOT contact your interviewer. The only thing you can do is send a letter to the admissions committee. That's it. Just relax.

(At this point I was really shocked that she cut me off again and then had the audacity to tell me to relax when she was the one on edge.)

Me: (somewhat confused) Oh, ok. Well thanks. Bye.


I'm guessing that this person had lost their patience with applicants, but it was just a rude reception. The whole thing was strange considering that up until this point, I thought Cornell had some of the nicest admissions staff as far as Med school Admissions offices go.

I just think it's kinda funny that it's "illegal" (whatever that means) to speak directly to one of your interviewers. What a strange and silly rule. I always thought your interviewer was like your advocate to the admissions committee.
 
maybe they have to be rough because in most cases (for faculty interviewers at least) it is probably not that difficult to obtain e mail addresses online. just a thought.

i thought cornell administration was extra friendly, too.
 
I don't know, all my interactions with the people (admissions staff, doctors, faculty, etc) have been amongst the most pleasant of any school. Obviously I don't know what happened in this case but maybe something else was going on - they were trying to help 2 people at once (you on the phone, and someone standing infront of them?) or were distracted for some other reason and just didn't realise how they were coming across. Either way I'm sorry you got this reception but try not to take it as indicative as I really have had quite different experiences with the people there.
 
So my cousin has a little brother that is applying to medical school this year. My cousin and her friend came to realize earlier that the little brother and I are both on the waitlist at Cornell.

Long story short---> the little brother just got a call on Friday that he was accepted off of the waitlist. Apparently in the phone call, the office of admissions mentioned that he was the first one off the list.

I know it's a "brother-of-a-friend-of-a-cousin" story, but I think it's ligit.

....AND SO IT HAS BEGUN!!! :clap:
 
hey wazupshah,

i actually had a similar experience recently. i wanted to get in touch with a student i met at the interview. this student told me i could get contact info if i had any questions from the admissions office, but they wouldn't let me have it!

i guess this makes sense in some ways, but is there any way i can get in touch with current cornell students to ask questions??

i called the admissions office, and they said that they pulled the first group of people from the waitlist on the 5/15 (informed by email).

hopefully if we didn't get pulled, we still have a chance!

Hey everyone, there seems to be very little if any movement on cornell's waitlist this year. Is there any chance of being pulled from the WL or should I just give up hope?
 
i got off the waitlist 2 weeks ago, so don't give up hope =)
 
So far I've sent two LOI and stopped by the Admissions office and still no response from Cornell. I think the people who got in after 5/15 are not going to give up their spots so the class is pretty much full and closed. I guess i better start getting excited about Downstate and Brooklyn.
 
well, don't give up yet MedguyNYC - I know 3 people who plan dropping their acceptance if they get in elsewhere (which frankly they are pretty likely to do) and the first group from the waitlist was only pulled on the 22nd or so. I think it's a long ways from being over yet! 🙂

nope. i originally wrote a letter of intent to Stanford b/c they were my first choice school. but they confirmed yesterday that they're not taking anyone of their waitlist this year...

do you think it's moral for me to now write a LOI to Cornell? I'm still waffling over whether i would go there over Mt. Sinai anyway...

how about you MedGuy? have you written a LOI?

If Stanford have told you you will not be accepted there I would say that of course it's now fine to tell Cornell that you would matriculate there. After all you are not deceiving them you are telling them the truth as of today (if indeed you *would* now matriculate at Cornell given that opportunity).
 
hey greenwitch, I sent two LOI and still no response. I think there will be very little movement on the WL this year. Its up to you tho. if you prefer PBL/Cornell over Sinai, then yeah show interest at Cornell.

Hey jk498, greenwitch and everyone else, I have officially given up all hopes of getting into weill off of their wait-list. Somehow I knew from the time I got the waitlist letter that it was equivalent to a rejection letter, although a little less harsh. I'm not disappointed however, I'll be attending Downstate where I will probably get better clinical exposure, a good medical education and above all, pay about 1/2 the price of a weill education. After graduating from a very expensive undergrad and struggling to repay my student loans for the past 2 years, I decided that the cost of an education is an important deciding factor for me. So, with that, I've decided to go public over private, study hard for honors, ace the USMLE and get the top residency that I'm aming for. I think i'll be fine..

You sure Cornell didn't make this decision for you. You sound like a little child trying to justify receiving a used coloring book when you could have gotten a brandnew painting set.

Whatever the case, I just wanted to point to you how the post was coming across. Good luck at downstate!

You'll definitely be fine at Downstate. However, I dunno if you should give up! My friend who currently is a first year at Cornell, got off the WL in July.

But I hear you...I'm not holding my breath either. And I'm pretty excited about Columbia now, especially with getting all the orientation information. It's becoming likely that even if I get pulled, I'll probably stick with Columbia.
 
good luck at downstate, medguy. i hear that it's a great place. i'm starting to lose hope as well... i called the admissions office today and apparently there are no seats available as of now... just my luck...

hey alphabeta, I take it you got into cornell, good luck. You will meet a lot of people like yourself there. And no, cornell didn't make the decision for me. they just give me enough time to think and make a decision that best fits my family's financial situation. Your interpretation of my post tells me you are the type that depends on a school's status to make a name for yourself. While that is fine, i'm not like that. I'll make a name for myself, no matter where I go. Once again, good luck at cornell.

nothing new here... anyone know how many people have received acceptances off of the waitlist so far? i was told that in a typical year 150 people are on the waitlist for about 30 spots. i'm not sure if this is a typical year for the cornell waitlist though... any thoughts?
 
So, I just got off the phone with the admissions office. Basically, there's not much movement (though, the lady seemed really willing to answer questions...so if someone who's a bit more assertive than me wants to ask something, they should call). But she did ask me if I wrote a "letter of interest". I told them I did back in March, but she encouraged me to write another one.

I found that to be very fascinating. I dunno if I will...my drive to go to Cornell is wavering...

here's yet another pathetic attempt at cornell... anything new here? does anyone expect anymore movement in the coming weeks?
 
I'm on the Cornell waitlist too and have not been successful in obtaining any information regarding movemment. I've tried my interviewer and someone else I know very well, but they have not been responsive. What is going on?!!! It's mid July!!
 
i totally feel you. i'm really hoping to hear something by the end of the month. my pseudo deadlines that i'm imposing on cornell keeps extending itself with every empty mailbox. it's getting pretty pathetic. here's a question: do they actually send you a rejection at some point?
 
hmm...I was wondering that myself...but either way, it's over for me. Since I had to commit $300 to Columbia for housing, that's where I'll be in the fall. Cornell would have been nice, but things happen for a reason I suppose...

Eh? I'm not despondent! Far from it. I feel really lucky to be going to Columbia, no doubt about it. My reason for wanting to go to Cornell was the fact that I liked the curriculum better and I got a better vibe from the school. Even though it didn't work out, I still feel really happy. I'm definitely not bitter or upset.

Then again, I can see how you would have gotten that from my post. My bad!
 
Friend of mine got in two weeks ago off the waitlist--I wouldn't give up just yet. No need to be despondent.
 
Thanks for posting Michaelsavage--it's good to know that there is still some movement on the waitlist. Is anyone else still waiting on Cornell?
