What do you guys think? Does getting an interview from a school mean you have a high chance of getting in their program? Of course it's not a cause and effect relationship, but I think there is a strong positive correlation... correct me if I'm wrong.

I mean, I know there are instances where you get an interview but still don't get in due to the program being full. I forgot which school it was this year, but it caused quite the agony for many students.

SO FAR I have a perfect score... you pretty much have to botch the interview to not get accepted, i think this mostly works for the first rounders though...

Some may think getting an interview will give you an advantage of getting into a school's program, but contrary to popular belief, this is false. Getting an interview with a school actually means you have a lower chance of getting into a program than not getting an interview at that school. This may be confusing to some, but I spoke with a very high profile adviser on an admissions board and this is what they told me.

I have no idea what your talkin about???? getting interview have lower chance than no interview??? I might put it like this.. interview "lower chance" V.S no interview "no chance at all".

Back to the topic of this thread, i think if you have good stats (21>DAT, 3.7>GPA), lots experiences and other stuff, you will probably get in eventhough u might not do very well on ur interview. However, if u have an average stat (19DAT and 3.4GPA) you have to really nail the interview to have a shot.

Getting an interview does bring you closer to gaining acceptance as all schools require it. It doesn't guarantee you anything. Since admissions is rolling, you never know. For example, person A can be interviewed in october but person B hasn't even applied. Person B then applies and interviews in December; person B can be offered admission before person A. This is where it gets complicated.

If you get an interview you have about 20-30% chance of getting accepted.

If you don't get an interview you have a 0% of getting accepted.

That sounds about right. Last year I had 4 interviews (Tufts, Temple, NYU and Penn) and only one acceptance.

But that could also mean I'm a crappy interviewee.

I think a lot of it depends on the school too. Some schools don't interview as many applicants, meaning you have a better shot to get in once you get that interview. On average, schools interview 3 students per seat, giving you about a 33% shot. I got 5 interviews, went to 4, got into 3 schools. So I think there is a pretty positive correlation.

Like everyone said if you don't have any interviews you won't have any acceptances.... I interviewed at 5 schools this year and got into 2 so far..... but I would say that they probably base it more on your GPA and DATs then you ability to interview..... Some of my interviews were about football, and some were more serious, I really believe that they are just testing to see if you are an actual human being and not a freak that spends every waking moment huddled in the library studying.....

Between my two years of applying I have had 5 interviews, 2 acceptances. Two wait lists last year->rejections, and one waitlist this year. So interviews do not mean acceptance...but then again I also may be a bad interviewee so who knows. I think it also depends not only on the school but when you interview, last year most of mine were late interviews so that hurt my chances as well.

Yeah I thought having an interview more or less gave you a higher chance of getting in the program if you do well during the interview.

How late were your interviews? if you don't mind sharing. Thanks

Last year I interviewed at Temple and Buffalo, I thought I did well in both, specially buffalo, but I got waitlisted in both, I interviewed in February so it might have been because the classes were full, but still it sucked.

Last year NYU in Feb. accepted, Maryland March-Waitlisted->rejected, USC April waitlisted->rejected

it has to be much higher.... i had 9 pre december interviews...9 acceptances...( my stats are nothing crazy) . you go to the interview... act like a normal human.... be able to carry a conversation that has nothing to do with academics and dentistry and you will get in.... show them you care and act really confident/almost arrogant. they do not want little shy people who are scared to speak up... they want confident smart people who they know are going to make it through the 4 years. That is really the only thing that they are looking for in my opinion. THey just truly want to know if you are confident and dedicated to make it through the long journey of Dschool

I applied to 15 schools, had 10 interview offers, went to 8, got accepted to 3. I did bomb a couple of interviews so there was no real shock when I didn't get into those schools. The admissions department takes how your interview went, into consideration on who they will accept. Don't let that person tell you they don't matter. they matter!!

Confident but not arrogant. Confident but also down to earth. Courteous and respectful. I tend to be shy and timid but that didn't stop me from getting into SUNY-Buffalo. They want to see the real you. I wouldn't want to go out of my way to try to impress them.

It was personal reasons I did not go to NYU (nothing bad, just wasn't right for me). I am still predental thats why my name says that. I will not start till this summer.

I'm shooting 50%, I went to eight interviews and got accepted to four schools. My wife on the other hand has a bit better %, she's been accepted to five of the eight.

High chance? No. It just means you have a better shot than the person who never interviewed there.

There are instances where people interviewed for open seats and got rejected too. Interviews are great and all, and you should be happy that you get one. But I wouldn't bet on an acceptance until I get that email/letter in the inbox.

🙂

It definitely matters how early in the application process you interview. From a pre-December first interview you have the first crack at a seat.

My undergrad GPA was pretty bad. I was confident, though, that it was not a true reflection of how I am capable of performing. I knew that if I could just land an interview I would be able to convince my interviwers the same about my GPA. I applied to, I think, 14 schools knowing that my GPA would hinder my chances of getting accepted. I was invited to interviews by Louisville, and Midwestern. At UofL I was honest and ginuine with my interviewers and answered the questions head on about my grades, expecting them to be brought up. I didn't even go to my interview at MWU because I was accepted to Louisville and the deadline for the deposit was before my interview date at MWU. I'm very content with my decision. For me, I felt that just GETTING an interview was harder for me.

Ha! Love it! I definitely agree!
