Hey all,

I would like to do residency/live in a large city (i.e. Chicago, NY, etc.). Would going to a medical school in such a location increase my chances of gaining a residency in such a location? How influential is the medical school location in this context? Also, how important is residency in determining where you eventually live? Thanks in advance for any input!

yes, very, very. Tomorrow I'll pull up my post on this subject for you.

Lemme change my answer to yes, somewhat, very.

Please do pull it up if you can find it. Thanks!

There is a correlation between where people go to med school and where they do residency, but that mainly has to do with a selection bias because people who live by a med school for four years often have many reasons to stay in the same area (family, don't feel like moving, already know and like your attendings, etc). If you go to med school in California and your goal is to do residency in Chicago, you will not have any problems doing so. If you are really interested in goingto a particular program in Chicago, you can do things like audition rotations where you do a rotation at the program for 1 month so that the attendings can get to know you. For residency, there is still that selection bias with people just wanting to the stay in the area, but there is also more of connection building going on during residency in that it's easier to get a job and work in areas where you did your residency because you know many of the attending in the area. That being said, physicians can and do readily move during their career, so it's not like it's impossible or all that difficult to work in Chicago if you did your residency in California. So basically, I would just say go whereever you want to for med school and residency and you can choose to practice where you want later.
