on a recent episode of Dr. 90210, a dentist contributed to the facial reconstruction of a man who was in a car accident.

he did some procedure where he filled a mold with acrylic, and once it hardened it seemed to adapt to the mouth and they looked like newly constructed teeth. but he didn't have any teeth to begin with, so I have no idea what was being molded.

My dental lexicon is zilch, so can anyone decipher, based on my description, what exactly this dentist did, some details, etc? thanks

Sounds like dentures to me.

That's it? odd.

What's the favored dental approach to place a permanent row of say 3 teeth?

If they don't have any teeth, why would you only give them 3 teeth?

I saw the episode. The dentist prepped for a bridge and then placed provisionals.

To the OP: those teeth you saw when the patient left were made form acrylic and were simply provisionals (or temporary teeth) that the patient has until the actual crowns come back from the lab. The dentist took an impression of the teeth the patient had, then fabricated a stone cast from that impression. He then waxed teeth to fit into the spaces on that cast, took another impression of that, and then filled that impression with the acrylic to make the provisionals. The patient then returned, had the temporary crowns removed, and the actual bridge was cemented into place.

It was an obscene bridge, if you ask me. It probably had 5 abutment teeth and 5 pontics. I also thought the end result was terrible. Poor anatomy and color.

i believe he did have teeth to begin with. first the "dead" teeth from the accident were extracted. but then there were i believe 3 or 4 good teeth left. these teeth were prepared (trimmed down at certain angles, etc). what you don't know is the dentist probably made a template of how he wanted the teeth to end up looking. so he filled up that template with acrylic and placed it over the trimmed teeth. he then removed the mold and shaped the acrylic to how he wanted it with the teeth replacing the gaps. that acrylic didn't just stick to the teeth and adapt to the mouth. it's placed, then removed and shaped, etc. to the layperson i'm sure the end result looked fantastic. those were the temporary's made from acrylc, the permanents ones made of porcelain +/- noble metals are made in a lab. it's termed a "bridge" which is a pretty good description.

there was another episode where implants were placed into the maxilla, and then a fixed bridge was fabricated on top of the implants - but that episode was a while back so i don't think you're talking about that.
