is anybody out there specializing in cosmetics?
do dentists specialize in cosmetics, or does cosmetic dentistry fall under general dentistry?
is it hard for dentists to establish themselves as cosmetic specialists?
just some simple questions from a first year dental student.
thanks

"cosmetic dentistry" is not recognized as a specialty by the ADA.

It's hard to say where cosmetic dentistry falls under. It can be achieved through operative dentistry (bonding for example). Or fixed prosthodontics (crowns and veneers) or even periodontics (gingival recontouring to get rid of gummy smiles, etc.) or oral surgery (closing a cleft lip/palate).

Under the ADA code of ethics, you can advertise yourself as a general dentist who emphasizes cosmetic outcomes, but you can't advertise yourself as a practitioner of "cosmetic dentistry."

HTH.

There is no recognized speciality of cosmetic dentistry. However, thre are a few dentists that only do cosmetics and will either refer out the usual stuff or have associates do it. These are the big time lecturers and gurus like Rosethal, Dorfman, etc.. The great thing about being a general dentist is that you can incrporate cosmetics in your practice and as you and your staff get better and more comfortable, you can't help but to do more cases. In the past I maybe did one veneer case a year and now its at least one a month, and its increasing as I feel more confident to tackle the bigger stuff.

Also I think we are all cosmetic dentists in that we want to restore things that are cosmetically pleasing. Its a great and fun time to be a dentist. Good luck
