This thread is to document how much it cost you to apply to a Doctoral level Psychology program in 2009. This includes application fees, all postage, plane tickets, hotel rooms, gas, anything else you wouldn't have had to pay for were you not applying...

Please include:

how many places you applied,

type of program

how many places interviewed in person

I spent around $1100
I applied to 10 PsyD programs, 0 PhDs
interviewed in person at 3

I'm interested to here what it approximately cost others

Oh God, I don't want to know. Thankfully my parents covered most of it.

I'm astonished that you got away so cheaply - did you include both app fees and ETS fees? Just those two and you're approaching $100/school, let alone travel costs.

I applied to 9 programs, interviewed at 1 (with minimal travel costs) and spent about what you did. Ish.

Applied to 8, interviewed at 5, and spent about $1200. The VAST majority of that was the application fee/ETS/transcripts/postage part though, as most of my travel costs were covered by the schools. Application fees in Canada are expensive. *sigh*.

I applied to 12 programs and interviewed (in person) at 8. Had to fly to 7. I haven't done the math (because I'm terrified to) but I'm guessing it was in the neighborhood of $2000 total. Sigh...

Investment in the future, right?

Applied to 8, drove to 3 interviews, flew to 2, and did 2 phone interviews. Having a student host helped keep the costs relatively low, so I think it all totaled to about $1500 for me. It was kind of risky only applying to 8 programs, but I got one offer so far, which is all you really need, so it worked out. I don't think I could have afforded to apply anywhere else.

I spent over $1200 (my parents gave me a nice Christmas gift and paid for half of my application fees) and I applied to 15 schools. That includes taking the GREs and Psych GREs, sending all of the score reports,stamps/postage (I over-nighted a couple of things) and of course the application fees. Luckily, my interviews were close enough to drive. Since my parents drove I didn't have to pay for gas or a hotel.

Applied to 15 schools, 6 interviews (flew to 5- all out of country). Stayed in a hotel for one of them, otherwise stayed with grad students/family in the area. In terms of app fees, ets, transcripts, travel expenses I probably spent around 4000 (Canadian). I'm lucky that my parents helped out with some of the costs

Grad school is expensive!

12 application fees between $50-$65 a pop
+3 school transcripts $4, $8 and $10 a pop
+GRE general test x2
+GRE subject test
+$$$$ I spent on study courses for the GREs
= WAY TOO MUCH MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I could have bought the most stylish handbag. 🙂

about 1300 for fees, travel, ETS scammery.

Plus the blazer/slacks that posts in this forum eventually convinced me to buy...another 800.

I don't mind most of the expenses...even application fee. CUNY's $140 was a bit excessive, considering that they haven't even bothered to send any notice of any sort, or to set up an online system by which one can check their status.

ETS was the worst rip off. They screwed up so many of my mailouts...they were useless on the phone, and they have the market (us) cornered.

I forgot to include the cost of the new clothes I bought for interviews. That puts my total to about $1500. plus the opportunity cost of missing work days to interview... I'm going to stop thinking about this now

GRE + Psych GRE = $280
Extra money to send GRE's to more than 4 schools= $160
Application fees = around $350
Gas to drive all over the place= $150

So close to $1000

And I will probably be doing it again next year if I don't get off this wait list 🙁

But at least the GRE's are good for 3 years!

I SECOND THAT! Thank goodness I don't have to retake my GRE's again, that was a rip off.

spent about $100 per application probably more... 7 applications, so probably $800.

-Taking the GRE twice - $280
-Taking the Psyc GRE - $140
-Books to study for the GRE - $50+
-Applications fees for 14 schools - about $630
-Sending GRE scores to 14 schools - $200
-Travel to interviews - $1000
-Interview suit (on sale!) $140

Grand Total cost of applying: $2440
