MSAR lists COA with the following categories: Tuition/fees, other, and health insurance. What is the "other" category. It is quite high, averaging about 20k..... Are these other fees you need to pay if you attend the medical school that aren't apart of your tuition (I know college does this with activity fees and things like that)?

It might be cost of living

Cost of living. Factors in how much housing, food, and transportation cost. That stuff will be higher at, say, UCSF than UMiss.

If "other" is cost of living, then 20k is a bit low depending on what part of the country you're in. In a place like NYC, even if the school subsidizes rent at like $800 a month, that's around 10k a year. Then if you survive on a $400 a month budget for food, that's another 5k. That leaves you with around 5k for miscellaneous living expenses.

Don't they factor that in? Not sure how accurate it is but other for New York is about 3 thousand dollars more than in Ohio at least.

They should factor that in with the COA estimate. That's why saying 20k is "quite high" is misleading. It might be quite high if you're going to Mayo Clinic but not if you're at Cornell.

I'm a little lost here lol. Ok on the MSAR there is a listing of costs... The tuition, books, all that good stuff

Then there's an other section which I'm pretty sure is cost of living. This other section is what I'm referring to. I looked at New York schools and Ohio schools. New York one was 3 thousand more at 23k. So doesn't that mean they do include it?

I'm kinda confused on whether we're referring to the same thing or not lol

it is the cost of living - room/board etc. in fact if you look at school's websites it also includes things like the price of USMLE and travel required

Now I'm confused. I was talking about the "other" that OP referred to. Was the 20k in the "other" category not the cost of living? My point was that 20k can be "high" or "low" depending on which school OP is looking at.

Ohhh ok lol, on the MSAR the other category is the cost of living category as far as I can tell. But ok we were making different points haha. I was just trying to say that the MSAR does show some states having a higher cost of living over others.
