I'm curious as to what health insurance options you guys have had? Esp. those of you with families . . .

What does your coverage cost? I'd like some idea of the mean - mine's like 300/mo for me and my wife and child.

Any input is greatly appreciated 🙂

Like all academic institutions, medical schools will have student health plans so it just depends on what your med school charges. I pay $1,700 per year for just myself. They charge us roughly (very rougly) twice as much to cover one other family member (spouse or child). To insure you plus your entire family they charge a little under $5,000 per year. That doesn't include dental insurance though.

If your spouse isn't working you can put the kids on Medicaid.

the medical insurance fee you pay for while in med school doesn't include dental coverage?

of course a dental plan is available, I'm not sure the cost though, but it's much cheaper then medical coverage.

Ask to look at your plan. As far as I know, Case Western (I'll be there in one way or another) offers its student's the same plan it offers undergrads, which costs something like $450 a semester. It is total ****.

It has a lifetime maximum payout of $50,000 per insured, which is obviously way too little.

I prey nightly that Case will offer its med students something better than this.

@juddson: that must be frustrating...for 450/mo you would expect much, much better than that.

Our student health plan is ~300/mo, plus ~30/mo for dental. It is not an excellent plan, but it is decent. (Aetna/US Healthcare). I did not read the family literature for it, but I did read the rest carefully.

I assume your spouse is not working, or is self-employed. In this case, you may want to think very carefully about choosing your health plan, since a more expensive plan may save you money in the long term. The amount of financial aid (read: loans) will cover your health insurance costs if you live frugally, but you may be left high&dry if you are stuck with a big hospital bill and no insurance.

My advice is to always read about the plan on the internet, and request a copy of the healthplan book first (usually a BIG book they only give out voluntarily after you purchase the plan) and do some research. Are your meds in their CPB's? (Clinical Policy Bulletins) and formulary? If you need quick access to specialists, will your plan be flexible with this?

Oftentimes the people to contact about health insurance purchases are the student life staff (the office of student activities, student life etc). They may have some recommendations to offer.

Got to Fortis. For under $300/month, you can insure your entire family with $2,000,000 lifetime coverage and $250 decutable every 6months and 100% coverage after that. Or for $110/mo, you can get major medical with $2500 deduct and 100% after that.

Right now my wife works and we have United healthcare through her company. A better plan i could not imagine. The question is will she be able to work while I'm in medical school. Even if she earned nothing but the health benefits for part time work (Cobra is $820 a month, which gives you some idea how good the plan is) it would be worth the part-time work.

Yeah, we gave up United Healthcare when my husband quit his job to move to Chicago. I feel your pain. Now I am using my school's insurance which was $450 for the quarter for just me. Luckily I haven't had to go to the doctor to find out how much I will be paying out-of-pocket. I sure miss the good old days!

$200/mo at umich. doesn't include dental. 😡

At Mayo you are treated the same as an employee of the Mayo Clinic and are given the same benefits. Health insurance is $25 per month for 80/20, with 100% coverage after $2000. Prescription drug, dental, and vision are included free of charge.
