Could I get into Stanford?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also, I haven't shadowed a physician, but I feel like that's something a monkey could do.

I'm pretty sure any school would accept a doctor-shadowing monkey over basically any other applicant. I know I would.

You're right at their 10th percentile for accepted GPA's but almost at their 90th percentile MCAT....so that might offset.

On the other hand they really care about the whole package and like people who take a year or two off to boost their EC's and your EC's are pretty run-of-the-mill for a top-10 applicant.

Your avatar is so disturbing.

Also, OP, the point of physician shadowing is not that it's a hard thing to do. I think too many people go overboard with it, but it can be very valuable.

Haven't started an international nonprofit or multinational corportation? No publications in Nature or Science? Haven't written a book? Not a Rhodes Scholar?

Your answer to the above questions is the same as Stanford's answer about your application.

OP, quit with these ridiculous threads. Go buy a copy of MSAR.

LOL.

OP, don't be such a worry wart and apply to your top 15-20 schools in the Spring/Summer and see what happens. You're asking people to predict the future when there is no 'yes' or 'no' answer set in stone. G'luck.

Aim high and aim realistic. Simple as that.

If you keep applying to these top 20 schools exclusively, you might be in for a couple cycles.

Unlike the overly optimistic posters on this thread, I'm going to go out on a limb and tell you the truth: you're probably not going to get into Stanford. Your extracurriculars don't sound particularly impressive and your GPA is pretty low by NYU standards. (My best friend attended Stern for a year before transferring to Wharton so I'm familiar with grading over there.) That said, you can definitely apply for the hell of it but ensure you have schools more within your range (tier 2-3) on your list. It's important to be realistic.

P.S. In my experience, it's a waste of time to ask people on both SDN and CC what they think of your chances. There isn't much beyond writing great secondaries and performing well at interviews that you can control at this point in the game. I will say that there are HUNDREDS of awesome, insightful posts that tell you exactly what you need to have to be competitive for the absolute best (tier 1) medical schools. They are:
1) 3.8+ GPA and 39+ MCAT
2) The required EC activities (shadowing, clinical experience, research, "leadership," etc.)
3) Superb LORs, and
4) A distinct achievement, set of achievements, or interest that separates you from the masses of other premeds.
