Hi,

I had a difficult situation arise recently, and would like to know if I handled it appropriately. I have a relative who is absolutely crazy and should've blocked from my facebook a long time ago, unfortunately he made a very racist comment on one of my recent facebook photos directed at several minority students in my class. It was absolutely awful, I didn't catch it until a few hours after so several people in my class saw it and were upset. I personally apologized to the students at whom the comment was directed, and then posted an apology to my FB basically stating that I was sorry for it and I didn't share those views. I also blocked this relative from my facebook. The problem is that this relative shares my last name and I feel guilty by association, even though I would NEVER think or say something like that.

Should I have done anything else? I offered to meet with the students as well. I'm afraid I could get into trouble for this.

Why would you get in trouble for it? You handled it professionally and even apologized for that rotten family member. It wasn't you who made the comment.
You'll be fine, just shrug it off, and you don't have to meet the other students if you don't want to.
You handled it better than I would. I wouldn't even apologize for something I didn't do and would just tell that relative to behave or gtfo my FB.

Definitely get why you're worried as everyone is slipping tits over microaggressions and **** nowadays but you're cool, you didn't do anything. At most they could sit you down and give you a "watch the company you keep" type talking to.

Take a deeeep breath.

Exhale.

You're fine. really.

Why would you write an apology? It's not like it was you who said those things
