I understand this is a pretty controversial topic in the Medical community right now. I am currently partial owner of an electronic cigarette store. I invested some money to get my friend's business started. This was back when I had all but forgotten about going to medical school.

The issue is it is listed on my tax returns and Googling my name will show a connection to the business since our website has me listed as a contact and the local has a news article with my name that would turn up in a search engine. I do plan on selling my ownership before I go to medical school.

With all that being said, I understand there are schools where this would be a big no-no (UCSF). However, overall should this be a problem when I apply to medical schools?

Unless you have a super-unusual name, it is unlikely that anyone would connect you with the business. You are not required to submit your tax returns to the admissions committee and you need not list your investment portfolio on your application.

Thanks. I am actually concerned because my last name is not very common. If you Google my name the business is in the first couple of results.

You'll be alright. I own a Caribbean medical school and a naturopathic medical school, but nobody held those against me.

You may want to divest in the business sooner than later. It may not be an issue now while you are applying for medical school, but it will eventually become an issue when you become a physician.

Unless you raised the money for investment by being a stripper, then I think you'll be fine.
