Could someone explain the dental school application process?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

After seeing these two post, Interview/Acceptance/Rejection Thread and Application Timeline Thread, I realized there is so much I don't know about the application process and it's a little overwhelming.
Could someone explain the process to the best of their ability? What is AADSAS? Why does some people's residency differ from where they're going to school? etc. Is there any other information not posted that myself and anyone else should know that would be helpful?

Big thank you in advance!

These two threads should answer your questions:

1) http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/2015-guide-to-dental-school-admission.942453/

2) http://forums.studentdoctor.net/thr...7-application-cycle-and-the-universe.1197114/

Also go through the ADEA Guide to Dental Schools: http://www.adea.org/officialguide/

I'll try to sum up:

- before you apply anywhere, you need to make sure that you are fulfilling their coursework requirements. This information can be obtained on the school websites or the ADEA guide.

- You need to take the DAT (Dental Admissions Test). See the ADEA site for more information.

- AADSAS is the name for the dental school application that is done through the ADEA. This opens every year in June and closes about 9 months later (give or take. I don't remember). You do NOT need to have the DAT taken before you apply, but it is helpful.

- Many schools have secondary applications and fees.

- AADSAS has a status section where you can see where your application is in the process. Some schools have their own portal for this as well.

- Schools usually will invite prospects for an interview on-site. Occasionally, they will forego the interview altogether (rarely) or they may do a phone interview. I would expect to travel for interviews if you are granted them.

- At any time in the process, your application could be rejected.

- You will not find out about acceptances until Dec 1 at the earliest but acceptances will continue to be granted as time goes on.

I highly recommend purchasing the ADEA's Official Guide to Dental Schools as early as possible. Make a spreadsheet of schools you want to try for in terms of cost, what is realistic for you in terms of GPA and expected DAT scores, and anything else you want to consider. The big bonus in doing this early is you then will have information on exactly what pre-reqs to take, directly from the guide. Bring that list in to your advisor when scheduling classes.

Also, meet with you pre-health advisor, join pre-dental clubs, and continuing posting here. These are all great ways to get yourself acquainted with the process!
