Hello,

I am currently a student in the US and I am considering going to a Caribbean country to pursue dental school. The school I am interested in is an accredited university. Could someone explain to the process international students have to go through upon returning to the US? Board exams and all that. Even the difficulty level of finding a job and how you find you compare to students that were educated in the US.

Thanks!

Once you go through a licensing path here, finding a job is going to be the same as a student who went to Dental School here. If you go to another school, make sure you perform well and get a good GPA. And get good Recommendation Letters (3) from your teaching staff at the dental school where you studied. After coming back, you have to pass NBDE Part 1, and preferably part 2. Probably do atleast one preceptorship program at some university here, and volunteer work. It usually costs around 5-12k dollars. So when you come back be ready to spend around 20K dollars in study materials, Preceptorship programs, Applications, Bench Test Prep Courses and get some help on your Statement of Purpose for your application. MAKE SURE YOUR GPA IS GOOD. Its a long and hard road if you want to go to another country for your dental education and come back here to get certified.

I would say it's best for you to just do your Pre Dental work here, write the DAT, some volunteer work and go to a dental school here. it's a lot easier and a lot more convenient. If you stay here you will have the Infrastructure to go about these things. If you spend five years in another country and suddenly land back in the states, everything gets a lot more complicated.

Good Luck. 🙂

Thank you so much! That was really helpful. I actually applied in the US this cycle but it isn't looking good and I've been presented the opportunity to go to the Caribbean but now it is sounding like it isn't even worth it.

If school is accredited, then you just apply for the license
