Do some US schools have a system where do not consider the GPA for certain semesters? I have 2 semesters where I only took 3 courses. A couple of people have told me that my GPA in those semesters will not be counted for most US schools because I didn't take enough courses. I looked on school websites and this forum but couldn't find anything about this.

All US allopathic med schools count all grades earned at all post-high school institutions attended, regardless of the number of credits attempted.

Those people are misinformed. Any course taken at a college must be reported and a transcript must be supplied. Even taking one or two community college classes while in high school has to be reported and calculated into GPA.

I'm aware of that. I was just wondering if, when considering it for admission, they won't count my GPA for semesters in which I didn't take many courses. Thanks.

It sounds like your informants are familiar the system in (?parts of) Canada.

Many Canadian universities do this, so I asked a couple of people at my university who applied to US schools. I guess they had the wrong information.

Thanks everyone.

Interesting to hear many Canadian schools ignore performance during part-time schooling. Do you know what the logic for that is?

To protect against premeds taking a lighter courseload to boost grades. Many Canadian schools also don't count summer grades for the same reason. It's very judgemental but there are so many applicants per spot in Canada that they can make up rules like that.

Like people were taking 6 credits and doing nothing else? Wow. I was thinking more like working full time so you could only be doing 2 classes, or doing a summer prereq with part time work in order to go abroad, etc.

Silly Canada, their obsession with high Verbal makes no sense to me either

Yes, it doesn't matter whether you are doing it to boost grades or to earn money to pay for food, some schools still won't count the grades. Sometimes people with co-op terms get disqualified from a school because they don't meet the minimum number of credits requirement for a school year. This is one of the reasons I want to get out of here, so that I don't have to deal with crazy policies like these.
