EIGHT 1/2 DAYS AND COUNTING!

think you mean FEB 1st...haha, i'm waiting also. 👍

Denticus are you still holding out for Marquette or will you attend VCU for sure if you're accepted?

You guys are still having interviews at VCU? hmm (confused)
Im going there in a few days for a little tour hehehehe hope to see some of you there.

I hope to be part of the February 1st Acceptance Explosion!!!

Good luck to all those waiting on Feb 1st!!! You'll have to let us know how it goes.

Skyskier, you got accepted into vcu right?

think you mean FEB 1st...haha, i'm waiting also. 👍

Thanks, got that fixed. I have associated explosions so much with January 1st that I got confused.

Marquette...eh...I was waiting until I called them and they told me that they had only sent out 5 more letters for the second round since so many other punks decided to go there from 1st round acceptances. As far as VCU, I would FOR SURE go to VCU if they accepted me. I loved that school and have a lot of friends going there so I would have a blast. Don't know how big the February 1st "explosion" will be though. Dr. Healy told us that he "always" saves seats for second rounders and that he never has intended to fill his seats in the 1st round. I'm just hoping that the second round "explosion" won't be a lame 5 letters like it was at Marquette!!!! I hope he sends out like 100 letters...Now that would be an awesome explosion.

That's good to know that there are still a good amount of seats left for VCU. I hope I get in in February.

Well, he didn't say that there were "a good amount of seats left", just that he has seats left. I fear that, by the looks of the great number of applicants that got accepted according to predents, they may only have...a few...seats left. ARRRGGGH! I just hope I'm, or one of us here, are among the few that do get accepted.

That is pretty funny

Hope you guys get accepted.
Whenever I go to downtown Richmond, I pass through the VCU School of Dentistry, and I say to myself, "Gosh, I wanna go there one day" hahahahahah
There is lots of bars/restaurants in downtown Richmond, so If you want to drink a few beers after being in a lab for 5 hours straight... its all good. (make sure you msg me)
hahahaha

Thanks for the encouragement! As for the beers, I don't drink but I still loved Richmond regardless. I thought the city was clean and there were a lot of friendly people there. Why were you "confused" about us still interviewing at VCU?

Im not confused anymore denticus... its all good. I hope you get accepted, so than I can have another friend at VCU Dental School hehe 😛

I am waiting too! I sure there are a bunch of seats open still and the explosion IS like 100 letters. How awesome would that be?

WOOHOO! I wanna go to VCU!!

Just wondering how sure you are? Have you heard any more details than what I already know?

From what I understand when I interviewed, we were told they would send 60 acceptances on Nov. 30th (expecting to receive 45 deposits). They would then send more acceptances Feb. 1st. With 45 seats taken, plus the 10 from their D.5 program, this would leave 45 seats still available. So my guess is that they will send out 50 or so acceptance letters Feb. 1st.

Is this sound logic? Do my facts sound right with what everyone else knows?

I think you mean you can drink after 5 straight hours of lecture and 5 straight hours of lab along with tests every week?

I expect your D-1 second semester to be like this:

5 hours of straight lecture
5 hours (3 mandatory, 2 just bc you have work to do) of lab
Drink
3 hours of studying
Bed 😉

Enjoy, I wouldn't trade it to be honest though. I love it here!

How many of those are in-state? I was told by a dental student there that most offers made to in-state applicants are accepted, while out-of-state applicants usually decline offers. Does that sound about right?

sugarNACL,

I'm going to VCU starting next summer and I am just wondering why you are so enthusiastic about VCU since most people seem to not enjoy dental school too much? Are you just one of those super optimistic people that loves defending their school or is VCU just that awesome (kind of like Pacific-that everyone says is so great)?

Ha. It is funny because I have only really defended 2 places I was associated with; my last place of employment (a cancer hospital in NY) and VCU. I'm picky about what I endorse. That said, it isn't like I wake up at 6AM or earlier every day and say "YES, I GET TO GO TO DENTAL SCHOOL" but the quality of education is very good. We are treated like professionals, but a LOT is expected out of us. That shows us the school has a lot of confidence in who they accept. Overall, I do love VCU and the experiences that come along with it. They have the clinical, academic and research aspects for a rich all around experience.

The negative, to be fair, would have to be that they started our year with a brand new curriculum they are still ironing out. It will get us to see our first patient in April, but basically we have the previous D-1 schedule PLUS a bunch of stuff that D-2s learned before jammed into our first year. We are learning delivery of local anesthetic with them, taking perio, learning a bunch of clinical techniques not previously integrated etc. There is not enough faculty all the time to help out 90 students to check things off. That is the ONLY problem I have had with the program and they are WELL aware of it and working on the problem.

Good luck all ... VCU is a great place. 🙂

in regards to SugarNaCl's "bad things" about VCU....i think a shortage of dental faculty is nationwide and has nothing to do with VCU specifically. i enjoyed my visit while i was there. when i assisted as part of the interview process, there seemed to be just enough faculty making their rounds and approving procedures. of course this wasn;t in the simlab or whatever, but to be fair i think the shortage is a common prob for all dental schools across the board.

but then again, sugarNaCl is an actual student and i'm just a hopeful VCU applicant. 1 week till feb 1st!

Leaving the D.5 seats aside...50?! ACCEPTANCES?!...50?!!!! ACCEPTANCES?!!!!! I was being serious when I speculated that it would be likely for them to only be absent of about 5 slots. I say this because 1) This is happening with other good schools across the country such as Marquette and Baylor and 2) If you look at predents, it appears that VCU accepted a ton of people on the 1st. Now, if you look at Marquette's acceptances from the 1st round you only find a handful of people (according to predents) have been accepted when in actuality, as I've said before, Marquette only needed to send out 5...5!! more acceptances to fill their class. That said, assuming some trend with predents to reality (as crazy as it may seem), a lot more then a handful of individuals were accepted to VCU so it would not surprise me that they are actually, like Marquette, almost full. I would like to believe that they will send out 50 acceptances but that is just something I can't believe when I consider all of the people on predents that have been accepted...and have DEPOSITED at VCU. Depressing? Yes! I just don't want to get my hopes up about something that may never take place. I can still think selfishly though that I'll be ONE OF THE INCUMBENTS they choose to accept; it helps me sleep better at night.

Also, I would just want some further insight on the claim that VCU acceptancees tend to deny acceptances there. That is news to me. Everybody that I have talked to says nothing but words of adoration for VCU and how much they would love to go there...including yours truly.

i havne't posted in predent in awhile.. but dude your class doesn't look too happy to me - you guys are always too serious and too focused and too gunho but it could be just my classmates and my observations --- but most of the stuff sugarnacl said are pretty correct.

Ok. I must be confused here. Predents doesn't have all the applicants and stuff on there. So, where is everyone getting the idea that the class is almost full? It says 31 acceptances and only 12 people are going. I don't think its fair to try an extrapolate any sort of trend becuse i'm sure its not a valid random sample. Can someone please explain?

6 more days till the 1st!!!!

Of course stats reported on predents.com are just a sample of the true figures. But at least 8 people have chosen to attend other schools after being accepted to VCU. (So there are at least 8 spots open denticus)

DentalGal2005 and denticus I see on predents.com that both of you interviewed Jan. 15th. Didn't Dr. Healy give you any sort of indication about how many acceptances/deposits they had received by then? What did they specifically tell you about the numbers when you were there?

It seems those that have interviewed there more recently, like DentalGal2005 and denticus, would have been given more accurate numbers than those of us that interviewed pre-Nov. 30th.

I still think there will be closer to 50 letters going out Feb. 1st rather than 5. But maybe I'm being too optimistic.

i interviewed in january and all i can remember #'s-wise is that the waitlist starts in March and it will only be 10 people long. he will then go down the list calling 1 by 1 and if you don't pick up he will go on to the next name. according to dr. healy, being on the waitlist is still a VERY good thing. as for how many seats are still available, those that interviewed prior to or on jan 15th have no idea how many seats were left because dr. healy said deposits could still be in the mail on their way to VCU. with that said i don't remember him ever telling us the chances of us getting in. so everyone here speculating how many letters are going to be sent out......are doing just that, speculating. one thing we know is that there are at least 12 attending (from predents) and 10 from the D5 program. take what you want from that.....5-50 fits in that category, although i hope its more to the 50 end

How were the interviews at VCU? I'm getting ready to apply in May and would really like to remain in-state and go to VCU. I've been over at the dentistry school and MCV campus many times and wouldn't mind going there.

What are the first and second rounds of acceptance? Do all the first round acceptances go out in Jan. and then everyone else in Feb.? Are the second round applicants those who applied at a later date? I'm a bit confused..😕

Are classes from 8 - 5 everyday? I'm going to have to live from a walking distance to school if I have to wake up so early 😛

Do you have time for extracurriculars? I'd like to work out at least 4 days during the weekdays...if possible...

Okay, but lots of people (relative to other schools on predents) from PREDENTS!!!!!! deposited for the mere 35 seats (out-of-state). I'm willing to bet that for all the amount of people deposited just on predents, there will also be a whole slew more deposited who weren't on predents. I know a lot of people at BYU who have deposited who only look at predents for fun, yet have no account. I'm just saying this because of the whole Marquette deal, who BTW has 40 not 35 out-of-state seats. According to predents there were only a few people out of state that were accepted and less, again according to predents, who deposited. Nevertheless, they only sent out 5 more acceptances for the second round! Who knows though. Also, we really don't know if there are at least "8 open seats" from all of those individuals who deposited elsewhere. For all we know, they may have intentionally over-accepted in December anticipating that many who would be accepted would also choose not to go. This would get them closer to their mark.

As for what I know about numbers having interviewed Jan 15th. Healy really didn't give us any numbers per se. All he told us was that he never aims to fill his whole class in the first round and that he always keeps seats available for 2nd rounders. That said, we know that VCU has seets, we just don't know how many. However, given the apparent zealous deposit-happy nature for those who got accepted to Marquette, I'm finding it difficult to believe that other people wouldn't do the same for VCU. Yes, this makes me worried and yes, I would also like to believe that VCU mails out 50!!! acceptances. I just find it hard to believe.😳

Rock... Ha. I didn't know that other classes have that perception of us, but my bet is that it is because it is our D-1 year and with the new curriculum, they are pushing things at us pretty fast. We are supposed to see our first patient in April of this year rather than Novemeber of D-2 year and are taking perio and local anesthetic techniques with the D-2s or historically D-2 year reqs. I feel that we have barely gotten our feet wet because we are so new to this, so I think everyone is a little anxious/nervous being guinea pigs and all 😉 Just my thoughts. My guess is we will all be a little more relaxed our D-2 or D-3 year when we get more used to some of this. Are you a D-3?

Yeah, for the most part we are at school from 8-5, sometimes later, sometimes (not often) shorter by 30 mins- an hour. Of course you can find time for extracurriculars. I still do things with my husband on some evenings and weekends and am alternating in volleyball. If you live close to school, there are 2 gyms to work out at. You shouldn't have a problem finding time to work out... just have to balance, you know? It can be challenging at first. Good luck.

Reading that makes me even more nervous and anxious. Ah man, if I don't get into VCU, or even worse, into no dental schools, I think I'm going to hang myself. Well, maybe not... I can barely tie my shoes, let alone a noose. But I'll be pretty sad. How could they not take me? I'm so damn huggable!

Some seats?!! Holy crap! Heart rate just rocketed up to 155 bpm. Did he indicate how many seats a word like "some" would indicate? Dude, you must tell us if he mentioned anything about seats. What, if at all, did he say about how many seats he would be offering in the second round? Did he mention when they would meet again? I wonder if the "some seats" they offered would be the only ones getting the Feb 1st update on Friday!! Holy crap, so many questions with so much ambiguity...this is driving me mad. Feed me VCU!!!
