if you are applying to more than 1 specialty, do you use one ROL or do you have one ROL for each specialty. Also, for anesthesio, should i apply for both an intern year and anesthesio, seeing that some of the programs have slots that require you to have a intern year separately. Also, if it turns out you matched a categorical anesthesio spot, and also matched a transitional or prelim year, what do you do as you are legally obligated to those programs. How do you know in a case with a hospital that has both categorical spots and some spots that start with pgy2, that which spot you'[re going to get. THanks for your time

1. If you are applying in multiple specialties that use the regular match (not the SF match), you still only have one main rank list and you order the programs, without regard to the specialty, in the order you want them. 1-3 might be Anes, 4-6 might be IM, 7-9 might be lower-tier Anes, whatever your preference for matching is. Ideally, you'd decide on one specialty to save the aggravation of applying and interviewing in 2 programs (like I did with ENT and anesth; total pain in the ass).

2. With regard to categorical vs. advanced spots, programs with both have 2 match #'s. E.g., Univ of Chicago has some 4 year and some 3 years spots. I'll put the # for the 4year spots first, then my next rank will be be the # for the 3year spots. The computer knows this is an "advanced" progam, which requires a separate intern year, and so a separate "supplemental" list will appear. Each advanced program will have a separate supplemental list, or you can chose to have them all be the same. This way, if you land in categorical, 4year, spot, your supplemental list of intern spots won't even be considered.
