couple questions regarding carib schools...

Just found these forums, just been reading so far, haven't posted yet.

1. From what I gather SGU, Ross, and AUC are the best three Carib Med schools? With this order: SGU > Ross > AUC ?

2. If I went to a Carib. school, could I do all my rotations 3rd and 4th year in the U.S.?

3. For the first 2 years of Med School in the Carib. schools, is there Winter or Summer breaks?

4. I hear the Carib schools have trouble finding residency's, but if I just want to do family practice, would I easily find a residency?

5. Is the living conditions AUC > SGU > Ross? How bad (or good) is it specifically in SGU?

Thanks for answering any of those questions. My stats are White Male GPA=3.45, BCPM=3.35, MCAT=haven't taken yet. i'm in this borderline position where my grades aren't that competive for US schools but I'd probably be very competive at Carib schools.

1. Thats the conventional wisdom
2. Yes
3. There are breaks, but not as long. Check the school calendar for specifics
4. Yes
5. AUC is on the better (more western, civilzed) island BY FAR. Ross is the worst, I think, and Grenada is close to Dominica (Ross). None are quite like the US but Sint Maarten (or Saba) is a LOT closer than the others. I've been to all of the islands at one time or another.

BTW, check out Saba and SMU, as well. They're up and coming. But your scores aren't that bad, just do well on the MCAT and you should be able to get a US school. Also, check out valuemd.com for more info on the off-shore schools, and ask people who are attending them right now questions directly.

While the Carib schools listed are good, the US schools are better, and offer better residencies (even in FP). Keep in mind that while you may think that FP is exactly where you want to be right now, you may discover that another specialty is better and if possible, you shouldn't limit yourself.

yep I agree according to whatr I have heard in regards to "rating" of these school, but definetely SGU, Ross, AUC are all good. In regards to residency, if you serious You WILL be able to do something else other than FP, although maybe not plastic surgery at Harvard. Just check out this year SGU's grads' positions in their website. If you have any particular question about SGU (I go there), PM me or reply and I'll be glad to help.

First do well on the MCAT like around a 27 or above.

I would avoid the caribbean schools at all costs. First exhaust all options including MD and DO schools in the US. You should be competitive at DO schools if you get at least a 27.

If you don't get into a US medical school, MD or DO, then go to the caribbean.
