Couples Match From Different Schools

My girlfriend and I have been dating for almost three years. We are both second years, but we go to different schools. We have been talking about couples matching for a quite a while. In Iserson's Guide, there is mention that couples matching "is particularly troublesome" when both partners go to different schools, but there is no further discussion. What is the deal with couples matching from different schools? Is it even possible?

I'm not sure why they said that. It doesn't matter what schools you go to. It doesn't even matter if you are opposite genders. Heck, you don't even have to tell schools you are couple's matching.....and they would never know.

I don't think that being from different schools poses additional problems in the couples match. Not sure where that notion came from. You do need to make sure that you both apply to a relatively large number of programs; "how large" depends on the residencies in which you are interested and the strength of your applications. But that is no different than if you were both at the same school.

One of my advisors coupled matched when he and his then fiance were at different schools. He says they just went to a bed and breakfast for a weekend and cranked out their ROL. He's a plastic surgeon so I'm guessing it didn't hurt him any to couple match....

The only downside I can think of is that at my school a lot of our programs give preference to our own grads, so I know some couples listed my school as their "safety" program and of course that wouldn't help if you go to different schools. But really that's a pretty minor disadvantage, and certainly doesn't apply to many of the bigger name schools anyway. So I wouldn't worry about it.

You're still a 2nd year? Excellent.

Get a blowtorch and your copy of Iserson's. Go outside, place Iserson's on the sidewalk/street/d-bag neighbor's car and use the blowtorch to light it on fire. Walk away and forget you ever heard of Iserson. In a year and a half, when all of this matters to you, you won't remember anything about it.

I was always a fan of flame throwers, especially after reading a book on D-Day talking about how some of the soldiers would light cigarettes with them.

That's all I have to add other than some friends I know from different schools couples matched into different specialties.

I thought it could be a good idea if someone were to couples match with their enemy to ensure they don't end up in the same institution.

I'm in the process of couples matching from different schools. I don't think it was any different for us than it was for my classmates who couples matched, with the exception that I did an away rotation at his institution to have a better chance of getting an interview there. That's the only thing I would suggest doing (away rotations at each other's programs).
