Hey everyone,

I attend Drexel and we are on the quarter system. Our organic chem sequence is broken down into orgo 1, 2, and 3. Half of the year students are in class while the other half they are working full time in a job related to their major (while taking a class or two).

So right now i took orgo 1 and 2 during the fall and winter quarters. Now im about to start working at a hospital and I am able to take up to 1 class free of charge. I wanted to take orgo 3 so I can take the entire sequence in order and not have to wait until next fall to take orgo 3. I have read that med schools typically look down on students who take pre-reqs over the summer however I am not sure if this is the case for me as I will also have a full time job and not be sitting around doing nothing.

Based on what you read or your experiences, do you think this will really make a big difference to adcoms? I got an A in orgo 1 and a B in orgo 2 so I guess that shows im capable of doing well with a full course load.

Sorry if this has been answered. I had trouble finding an answer about the quarter system rather than taking something over the summer. My premed advisor just got "promoted" to prelaw also, so its nearly impossible to get in contact with him.

The "don't take pre-reqs over the summer" is a myth, unless you are taking your pre-reqs at a easier school/cc to boost your GPA. It is the same school, the course should be essentially the same no matter what quarter it is taken, so you are fine. Do well and there is no reason adcoms will even care when you took it.

Thank God, I was wondering if summer school chem + labs at my university would harm me. 🙂

Now if they affect your GPA, that's another story. 😀

As long as you have the pre-reqs done by the time you apply, you should be fine.
