Hello everyone
I posted in the nontraditional forum but no response, so thought I would try here.
27 yr old nontraditional here. I graduated in 2010 with a Sociology degree. Went to work in a high security prison for 3 years. My last 6 month stretch of work I went back to CC part time to finish off mandatory classes to apply for post-bacc at my university. In the past year I have completed the majority of my pre-reqs. Here is a breakdown of how this has worked.
Spring semester 13: 8 hour course load: Intro to Chemistry and Biology 1
Worked 40-50 hrs/week at the prison
4.0 semester
July 13: Left my job
Fall semester 13: 9 hour course load: Chemistry 1 and Physics 1
Worked 30-40 hrs/week for my father (farming)
4.0 semester
Spring semester 14: 13 hour course load: Chemistry 2, Physics 2, Biology 2
Worked 20-30 hrs/week for my father (farming)
4.0 semester (if finals go as planed)
As you can see its messy; my spread out course work was unavoidable due to working for a living, meeting requirements for being accepted into post-bacc and following the order of classes. All that I'm left with is Organic Chemistry 1 & 2. I will take them Fall 14/Spring 15. I have no other classes I need for pre-reqs application and quite frankly I need to keep working to stay above water financially.
In addition to Organic 1 this fall and working 30-40 hrs/week, I will be busting my butt studying for the MCAT because I NEED to take it in January 2015 before the new change takes place. If you've been keeping track, that means I will be taking it before Organic 2. So this is how my fall 14 will look.
Registered 4 hrs @ university for Organic 1 (what I'm worried about; only 4 hours)
Teach myself Organic 2 for MCAT (with assistance of my tutor: Organic Chem. Prof.)
Study all material like a boss for MCAT to be taken January 15
Work 30-40 hrs/week
Volunteer a few hrs/week at the hospital
So... when you look at my course load hour wise it look like I'm lazy. This hasn't been the case. I've busted my butt getting to this point. Will the admission committee fully recognize this or do they simply value high hour course loads. I know I must incorporate my circumstances into my essay, but will they care?
For spring 15 I plan to finish Organic 2, take Biochemistry and do an Independent Research Project with my Sociology professor on the recent changes in the healthcare system and its impact on providing care.
My undergrad gpa was around 3.59 and thus far my post-bacc gpa is a 4.0. I'm not aiming for any top-tiered programs, I just want to become a physician.
Any opinion?
