Hello all,

I was hoping to get some insight from the helpful people on SDN. I recently received an interview invitation at a T10 medical school. I have a parent who is a physician at this institution. They are not faculty, but are affiliated with the hospital. My parents are not donors of the school either. I did my research at this institution in which I got a letter of rec from a highly respected faculty member. In addition, I have lots of shadowing at this hospital. While I am a strong mission fit and feel like my essays were very good, my GPA/MCAT are in the 15 percentile . I know that it does not matter and I will go into my interview attempting to do my best, but I am curious if people think this interview is simply a courtesy? Thank you for any input

Based on your post, it sounded as if you have received an interview invitation based on your own stats and your own merits unless some unknown individual requested a courtesy interview for you, but without your actual knowledge concerning the same.

So, as far as I'm concerned, it's advisable to take this interview seriously and to present your best self in the interview!

Thank you so much for your reply. I will make sure to give the interview everything I have!

If a highly qualified student were to receive a courtesy interview, how would that impact their chances at the school?
Highly qualified students don't get courtesy interviews. They get the interview invitation because they deserve it. Courtesy interviews are issued to people who would not get the interview invite except because they have a connection to a VIP affiliated with the university or in political circles.
