Hi all,
So I am Canadian and have lived in Canada most of my life, however, after my freshman year of university, my parents moved to the States and I was able to obtain a US permanent residency this February (just in time for my application cycle!!!). Anyway, I am ready to make the move down south for med school and the rest of my life really, and have my first interview next week! At this point, I'm trying to brush up on the finer details/current issues of the US health care system...as it hasn't been something I've been paying much attention to until this point. Anyone have any links to good reading material (i.e. not wikipedia) on the subject or tips for prepping in general? Sssanks🙂

yah, I don't understand why people are so anti-wikipedia, its an amazing resource, I feel like its a by-product of schools not allowing you to use it as a source, which I understand, but that doesn't make it any less informative. Its not like you have time to read a book on health care in the US before your interview, you only have a week!

But if you do want a book, I liked this one, it has a lot of history: http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Health-Policy-Clinical-Medicine/dp/0071496068/ref=dp_ob_image_bk/176-6364971-8567734

theres a kindle version too so you could just download it to your computer

Just imagine the Canadian health system, then take away reason and accountability.

False, there is accountability. There are no frivolous law suits that end up making it far. Doctors still get sued in Canada, but they're not crazy capitalists that wanna make a buck off malpractice.

And... as far as reason goes... like I've said before... my top choice school is McGill, $3000 in tuition each year, and I get to live in Montreal, arguably the most European city outside of Europe... so... if you can't do math... Let's just say med school tuition+books equals about 15K...

What would you be paying for your MD? 40k a year? Sounds pretty reasonable to moi.

Don't go hating on Canadian health care so quickly. Oh and you get paid for your services no matter what... 3rd party payers are eliminated, and you're autonomous completely.

Don't be jealous of our free healthcare 🙄

Forget the free health care! The Canadian back bacon, the maple syrup, MmmmMMmmmmmmm.

Also to dispel some myths...

-Ontario doctors can run their own practices, they're not employed by the government
-Compensation is NOT CAPPED...

oh and.... EVERY RESIDENT IS COVERED FOR BASIC HEALTHCARE.... zero uninsured populations.

+1 for bacon, maple syrup, $3000 tuition and McGill! 😉

Um...I think he was saying that it's the US that doesn't have reason/accountability, not Canada...

Yes, thanks for the link! It's perfect. And thanks for the other responses too, very informative! ...And I take back the hurtful things I said about Wikipedia earlier...

Yeah, textbooks really aren't more academic in nature than wikipedia is since they're also just paraphrasing the original research in their respective fields.

But they're reviewed by people with degrees! And stuff! 😀
