In Ny state physicians are assigned licence plate on their cars with the indication "MD". You should see in NYC how they drive:Cutt off everybody, unsafe lane change, improper turn, 5 miles /hour in 30 miles zone.... just like "i'm a doc, I can drive how i want to". Shame on you , you drive like cab drivers and dont think you own the whole world...

How is that any different than other NYC drivers?

great post.

I think the mods should sticky this thread in the residency forums. it would be like a public service announcement.

That's the difference 😀

But yeah, I agree, that kind of sucks.

I'm pretty sure MD plates are only by request, and are vanity plates, not assigned to all physicians. At one time when doctors made house calls, these plates were useful as it sometimes helped doctors get out of traffic tickets when dealing with an emergency at someone's home. These days they tend to just tell the junkies which cars to ransack in search of possible doctor's bags containing pharmaceuticals.
So all this really tells you is that a small subsect of physicians who requests such plates is not great behind the wheel. Without knowing what percent of doctors this is, it is impossible to think there are more bad doctors than any other profession. 😀

When I was in high school, one of my friend's Dad was a doctor, and he would always tell us stories about how he never stopped at red lights because he thought he was too important and that the law didn't apply to him. 😱 Needless to say, he got many tickets.

I'll stick with my Red Sox/Jimmy Fund plates. They may not get me out of any speeding tickets, but they look awesome. I'll probably get more tickets since I'm going to NYMC in the heart of Yankee Country.

Putting MD on your license plate is one of the most pretentious things you can do, IMHO.

Yeah, we get it. You slaved away for four years for an MD and now you want to show it off to everyone. 🙄

Nobody's impressed, pal. Now move it, you're holding up traffic!

I am interested to know if having MD on NYC license plate gives them an advantage when it comes to being ticketed for violating traffic laws

That's nothing. About a month ago I was crossing Houston Street in Manhattan and there was a car was making a left turn. There was also a bike going straight. The car hit the guy on the bike and he flipped over and fell. He was a little disoriented but seemed okay and quite a few people asked him how he was doing. So, natually I looked at the car to see what the driver was doing then I I looked at the plates just in case and saw MD plates. The doctor driving slowed down but didn't stop. She didn't even have the decency to stick her head out of the window and ask how he was doing. She just took off. It made me sick.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe that's considered negligence in New York. At least that's the case if you identify yourself as an EMT at a scene and leave before someone of equal or higher medical training (like a critical care tech or physician) takes over for you.

Not to mention it screams I have money in the event of an accident. Prepare to be served.

Look out Maryland, we've got competition 😎

Don't see any MD tags out here. Probably just an "apply for bragging rights."

It's probably a crime regardless. Wouldn't this be considered "hit and run"?

It's all those asian woman doctors!! heh

Trust me it does nothing in terms of saving your ass from parking tickets (if you can even find parking in the city).

MD plates are not assigned but rather requested, I personally think its a way to show off and its just way of screaming to other motorists "Hey look at me! Get into an accident with me and sue for alot of money!"

As for the crazy driving in NYC, get used to it. With the plethora of cabbies, people talking on cell phones, people combing their hair while driving 60 mph on the BQE (yea I've seen that) and others being complete idiots on the highways, local streets and parking lots it's something you gotta get used to here.

PS: I simply HATE people that can't parallel park correctly and try to squeeze their Cadillac Escalade into a spot that can fit a Mini.

there was some report a while ago, one of those insurance types like the "car most likely to be stolen", that said doctors were the worst drivers....i'll see if i can find it later when i'm home from work

my parents (both docs) have gotten out of tens of tickets by just flashing the cop their hospital badge and telling them their on the way to the hospital. except for that one time a couple years ago when my parents were both in the car and my mom told the cop that her and my dad were on their first date and to not give them a ticket because it would ruin the mood (they've been married for over 25 years)

In California, physicians traveling to an emergency call are exempt from the Basic Speed Law:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc21058.htm
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc22351.htm
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc22352.htm

Note, however, that they must still follow all other laws, including the maximum speed law (65 mph on freeways) and stopping for lights, signs, etc. Also it says they have to display an insignia from the DMV, and I don't know if they actually issue those. This may be an archaism from the days when doctors made house calls and there was no EMS, but it's still interesting.

Yeah, they are these red "MD" bumper sticker-looking things. Its oval in shape, and not as cool as the NYC plates IMO.

As far as I'm concerned, all license plates are vanity plates.

😛

Why iseveryone hating on a vanity plate that says MD on it? What about other vanity plates like Socc4rMom, Princess, or YankeeFan. I dont get it, dont all vanity plates pretty much serve the same purpose? So is it specifically a vanity plate that says MD on it, or do people have problems with the idea of a vanity play all together? Would it be more pretentious for me to have a plate that said something like Harvard93 as opposed to one that said GSU93? Sometimes I hate the overly righteous pre-med attitude.

As I said before, the idea of having MD is putting a bullseye on your back. That sore neck from a fender bender turns into a disability and there goes your portfolio.

I was pretty certain I was going to die.

I followed a doctor I was doing a rotation with to a drug rep dinner.

That was the only time my spedometer hit close to 95 mph.

For some strange reason I would say affirmative. I don't know why though.

No, that is an understandable gripe. What I think is stupid is calling someone pretentious for having MD on their license plate, but its okay to have like golfer or lawyer or something. I say whoever has that attitude needs to get over themselves. To me, that type of thinking perpetuates a "doctors are holier than thow" mentality the most. Are we super humans who shouldnt have the need to identify our interests/job on our license plate like all the other mere mortals that want vanity plates?

It reminds me of those people you hear about that go on their interviews, and when its time to say where they went to school they say "oh, just some small college in Boston".

That's exactly what it's like to drive in Florida after a hurricane has knocked out the power to all the stop lights. Last year that happened at least 5 times. I kind of prefer it because there is less waiting.

I spent a month in India this past summer. The driving in India is absolutely insane! There are pedestrians, stray animals, cars, richshaws, bicycles, potholes, etc that you have to avoid. On top of that, there aren't enough lights, so in order to announce your presense at an intersection, you blast your horn from 50 feet away, letting others know that you're approaching.

The general rule is, the bigger the car, the more respect you get on the road. If it wasn't for astronomical gas prices, I'd love to have a H1 Hummer in India!

Thanks for writing this. I agree with you completely. Although, if I were to get the MD sticker, I would use it for the purposes of getting out of traffic tickets rather than for showing off my degree.

I have some friends who have family members in law enforcement. They have these little badge-like things that they keep in their wallets. If they get pulled over, they show the officer the badge, and get out of the ticket. If the charges are bad enough, then the officer severely reduced the charges. If doctors have some similar agreement or understanding with the police, then I wouldn't mind taking advantage of it. I especially wouldn't want to be falsely labeled as "pretentious" for doing so.

Is it too late to add a poll to this thread?

That being said, a lot of hospitals have "MD only" parking areas, the MD tag does help indicate that your car belongs there so you don't get a ticket when you come for a consult

Lets be a little optimistic once in a while. 😀

Oh, I don't do that. I think ALL vanity plates are obnoxious 😀

If you get MD plates, you should leave fistfulls of bills sticking out of your glove compartment. Because every car theif/burglar is going to assume you've got money anyway.

And for cop that thinks of cutting you slack because of your MD plate, there's a cop who'll be more likely to ticket you for it. For every person out there who's infatuated with physicians (or here, infatuated with BECOMING physicians) there is at least one more who think they're pretentious a$$holes.

And an MD vanity plate is pretty good evidence...

You should've given me a warning... something like "Don't watch the whole thing, traffic is all there is."

Good point. My EMT plates should indicate that I have no money
