this is old news. it's a case of fibrous dysplasia. i actually like this article because it says that it's a "tumor like" mass which is accurate. when this news story first came out they were calling it a tumor which it's not (it's all in the little details)....and why are you watching maury. geez.

Actually it was a "tumor". The term tumor just means an abnormal new growth of cells and the fact that it was dysplastic would show that it is fast growing, undifferentiated cells. A mass doesn't have to be malignant or cancerous to be a tumor.

tumor

[tu?mor](too´m?r)[L., from tumere to swell]

swelling, one of the cardinal signs of inflammation; morbid enlargement.

a new growth of tissue in which the multiplication of cells is uncontrolled and progressive; called also neoplasm.
(Dorland, Dorland. Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary, 30th Edition. Elsevier, 2003.).

it's just semantics. but the reputable pathology textbooks (Neville and Damm; Robbins pathology textbook) define it as a tumor-like lesion/s. It doens't meet criteria of a tumor. Sort of like calling a keloid a tumor because of abnormal proliferation and maturation. Also, tumors are usually not self limiting and aren't usually recontoured. Like I said semantics, but calling a fibrous dysplasia a tumor would be a unqiue arguement.

p.s. i know that a mass doesn't have to be malignant to be a tumor. ;)
