Does anyone study in a unique way other than reviewing notes and the book? If you do, could you please describe what you do to study?

Here is one of my techniques.

Creating Wikis using Voodoopad about each subject that is covered in class. I take notes in class, wiki-style, using an iPad with the Bamboo stylus with Bamboo's notetaking app. The notes get uploaded to Bamboo's cloud.

After class, I get on my computer and I take snapshots of the images from the notes in the cloud and I copy text regarding the material that we went over in class, including a ton of practice problems. I then go in to Voodoopad, paste the material in an organized fashion, and the wiki gets uploaded to the Voodoopad's cloud.

Since it is on the cloud, I can review the material anytime I want, in the most leisurely environments, on my iPhone or my iPad using Voodoopad for iOS.

I have to say, it works very well and I can study while getting other things done, such as standing in line or doing laundry. It saves a lot of time.

Well, I just read through my notes/textbook and do practice problems; if my notes/textbook are not clear, I just search the web for further clarification. Not very creative, huh. 😳 On an unrelated note, are you aware of what your username ("moco") means in Spanish? 😛

Haha, Nice!

Instead of flashcards use voice memos on your ipod and then listen to them throughout the day or before bed. Works like a charm. You'll get sick of listening to your own voice after a while, but whatevs.

This is pretty good. For Biochemistry I looked at the professor's current exam and the slides he had. For each slide, I made an index card asking several questions/main points about each slide. Then while looking at the exam, I thought of ways the prof could make the questions harder (that's what usually screws me when I'm on 3 or less hrs. of sleep). I ended up predicted a good 5% of the exam questions and knew the rest very well. I scored a 93 (2nd highest in the class).

With other classes, I try something where I try to ask myself these really bizarre questions which link multiple topics together.

For example, with genetics I like have a list of concepts at the back of each chapter. I pick 4 and see how I can relate them to each other. It works amazingly and I would highly recommend this!

Ex. Prader-Willi Syndrome, Deletion Mapping, FISH, and DNA Polymerase III (picked @ random).

With this I would be like so Prader-Willi is a syndrome caused by unequal crossing over of chromosomes which can be detected by FISH and when doing deletion mapping I would take a buncha control chromosomes and do some complementation experiments to see the point of mutation. Lastly, DNA polymerase III is the enzyme that causes the incorrect replication after unequal recombination.

Osmosis right!!!
I eat the paper sheets that I'm supposed to memorize 🙂

I put my paper sheets in a blender and mix it with milk and protein powder. Then I drink it and take a multi.

My most troublesome class in UG was calc - until I employed my calc-specific study method for my final exam: dont go to class at all, then get drunk for and cram 24 hours straight, making sure to sustain my buzz through studying and throughout the exam.

1st two calc tests without this method (doing normal stuff like going to class, taking notes, reviewing) -> C average.
3rd calc test using my drunk/cram/dont go to class method: 96%. Seriously.

I think it worked cuz my prof didnt speak english and sucked balls at teaching, and being constantly buzzed helped me relax and not overthink things.

Hooray Beer!!

Ha! That was the first thing I thought when I saw this thread. :meanie:

The second thing was the chagrined realization that 89 is probably the year the OP was born... 😱

I'll be serious and throw down a few study techniques.

Two column note method

This is where one part of the column has the notes you want to know and the other has a picture that you use to remember the notes.

For example:
-------------------
Virus neutralization assay is used to:

(Left Column)

1) one of the most sensitive and accurate methods for identifying a virus

2) Quantify antibody to specific viral pathogens

(Right Column)

1) Drawing of a bow and arrow aiming at the virus

2) Drawing of one virus surrounded by a lot of antibodies and another virus surrounded by very few viruses

---------------
The whole point of this two column method is just to use "exaggerated" pictures to help remember what is written in the notes.

VUE

Another is used by medical students called VUE and it is where you create boxes with information and link them like a web. It was developed by tufts university and it helps with concept mapping.

It is free, you just need to sign up for it though.

Here is the link:

Hope this helps

Wouldnt this technically be diffusion instead of osmosos since we're not talking about water lol. j/k

I also use flowcharts (programmer's style-with ovals, rectangles and diamonds) such as for naming chemicals correctly in General Chemistry. It helps you understand the concept, versus just memorizing material.

If you can create a flowchart for a concept you are trying to learn, you will understand the concept once you are finished.

An example (programmer's style) flowchart for getting in to med school in Canada can be seen here. http://www.premed101.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28154

Bumping this thread, I really want to see more replies. I need new study methods as well!
