Hey all--Not sure if this was already asked but it's been nagging me and has been an ongoing debate between some friends and I.

Anyways, do med schools (DO or MD) give any credence in terms of a lower GPA to traditionally "harder" majors like Engineering or Physics as opposed to a typical life sciences or humanities major?

If anyone could provide some references/feedback/anything that would really help!

This "harder" majors stuff is complete crap. I would probably get near straight As in engineering or physics but being an english major would be the end of me. It all depends on the skillset you were given. I was never taught calc 2 but got a 5 on the AP test in high school, and i put in almost no effort in organic and physics and was top 5 at worst in each of the 4 classes. But when i took classes like american lit it was just over my head. dont feel bad for yourself or anyone else because their chemical engineering major was hard, just remember it was hard for YOU but not everyone.
:luck: with applying though

simple answer: no there is no creedance at all. Only 3 things matter (in this order): MCAT, Science GPA, Total GPA. And really its MCAT >>>Science GPA>Total GPA. Does not matter at all what your major is. You have to take a handful of science classes and the MCATs. If you majored in aborigonee basket weaving and I majored in mind f***ing they have no way of comparing the two majors and they really don't care to. All they want to see is how you did in science and the MCATs. They appreciate that you did what you liked, but majoring in rocket science with a minor in cardiothoracic surgery isn't going to get you any better looks than majoring in beer pong and minoring in sudoku if both people have the same GPA and performance on organic chemistry

also in response to your signature "are we human or are we dancer". no s. just 'dancer'. It's a quote from Hunter S. Thompson, the creator of the gonzo style of documentary. It's an homage. The dude didn't really make sense and neither does that sentence, but it was his quote.

No, do NOT do what to you is a hard major. I was told maybe 25-30 years ago that mattered, but even 10 years ago it was a fallacy. Don't do it! Take classes you can get As in, do not take the hardest physics, Ochem, etc, unless you can get As in them! If you have to spend an extra year in school to get As do it! It is the almighty A that matters, nothing else

Major doesn't mean anything. As Gator said, it's all in the eye of the student. I thought PChem was a breeze (really), but anything history would have been the end of me. And I hated biochem with a passion.

No. Especially not if your GPA is lower than average because screeners do not take major into account. The MCAT takes care of standardizing.

Thanks for your responses! I understand the 'to each ones own' argument, but it was just an objective question.

Thanks. I later found this out--still don't understand why the quote is included in the song..guess that explains why im an engineer 😉

No, we don't. In fact, those types of majors can actually be a detriment to medical students because their way of thinking is different, and also they're not familiar with a lot of the material that has to be absorbed at a huge rate. ie., in taking lots of engineering/chemistry/physics/math, you're not getting anatomy, physiology etc. I have a few students who came by those backgrounds and they're in the bottom 25% of the Class at times.

So basically, a low GPA just tells us you're not going to handle med school well.
