Credit hours for a research year?

If you took a research year between 3rd and 4th year, how did you set it up with your school? Did you get credit for it from your home institution? Was it a paid or unpaid internship? Did you run into any issues with the lab having a time limit of 6 months for an intership? Thanks for helping with the logistics. My home institution doesn't have such a program, but they are willing to let me work it out with a PI at another medical school.
