Credit report

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got one from Equifax online. It's called 3-in-1 w/ Score Plus. Basically, you get all of your credit info from all 3 credit agencies and your credit score. It gives you a breakdown of what is weak/strong about your credit score. I liked it a lot. It was easy to get and easy to understand. Downside, costs $40. Upside, instant gratification.

Have you recently applied for a credit card? If so, they should send you a letter in the mail as to why you got turned down, and an adress where you can send for a free credit report. Or, you could try to apply for some sort of credit that you will get turned down for, wait for the letter, and save yourself 40 dollars. 😎

I did not get turned down for anything, I'm just checking to make sure it is ok.

FYI...if you are resident of certain states you get a free report once a year. Here is the list below.

If You Live In: Your First Report Is: Your Second Report Is: Additional Reports Are:
Colorad
Georgia
Maryland
Massachusetts
New Jersey
Vermont

I know that Transunion makes it easy to apply online.

http://www.transunion.com/Personal/CreditReportandScoreFees.jsp

Also, the following will also get you a free report. See below if you plan on applying for a job within 60 days.

You are also entitled to a free copy of your TransUnion Personal Credit Report once during any 12 month period if you certify to TransUnion that you are either: (1) unemployed and intend to apply for employment within 60 days; (2) a recipient of public welfare assistance; or (3) have reason to believe that your information on file at TransUnion contains inaccurate information due to fraud.

The other two bureaus are www.equifax.com and www.experian.com

both have the same policies by law.

The last post says that some states offer free credit reports, but how do you access them. I am in MD and I wanted to know if there is a state office to contact or is there a website that offeres these free credit reports.

Also once you get the credit report how do you send it to the schools?

You know every time you apply for a CC or check your credit it lowers your overall credit score so be careful to limit those number of inquiries.

Not entirely true.

You can check your own credit as many times as you want - that has no effect on your credit scores. It's when inquiries are made by banks, lenders, etc. that your score is affected, because such activity could imply that you're applying for new lines of credit.

You should make a point to check your FICO score in addition to getting your credit reports. You can get that at www.myfico.com - this site is adminstered by Equifax. This is one of the primary criteria lenders use for evaluating your creditworthiness. It's almost like the MCAT. You have to get over the low-score cutoff before they examine your transcripts (credit reports) in detail.

Ah good call. I thought it applied to all inquires.

I got my report from Equifax, and it was pretty easy to understand, aside from the fact that it didn't give me my SCORE! It listed all the cards or credit I've ever applied for (oy, I asked for a LOT when I 1st turned 18...BIG mistake!) and it also listed the credit I have now, but nowhere did it list what my actual score was, which is what I wanted in the 1st place. ??? Is this normal, or did I just happen to get a lemon?

No, not a lemon.

Equifax likes to omit the score so that you have to pay them another $12.95 to get it.... 🙄

Oy! Good to know, thanks JJNY. Those jerks! Grrrr. Oh well, I shouldn't have expected anything better from them.

Each company has a number that you call. It is all computer driven and takes about five minutes to do all three. You just need to search out the section of each companies web page that says something like " Fair Credit Reporting Act" information and lists the 800 number.

For everyone. I highly recommend getting a report from all three companies. I recently did this and found information from one company that was not reported by another.

Experian for around $9-10. I can't believe someone paid $40!!!!😱

I think the $40 was for all three bureaus. An NC resident, I paid around $8 per (the regulated cost) for all 3, so it can be done cheaper in general. Pretty much all states regulate this, many allowing a free yearly check (as mentioned). I checked over the web. Just go to each company's website.

Also, if you are rejected for credit because of a credit report from one of the bureaus, you are entitled to a copy of your report from that particular bureau.

I paid $40 to get all 3 credit reports (Experian, Equifax, and Transunion) AND my FICO score. Cost to get all of these individually:

3 credit reports x $10 = $30
FICO Score = $13
TOTAL= $43

Total Savings= $3 ...big whoop🙄

I figure we're already getting raped by applying to med school. What's another $40 to make sure your credit checks out and to get maximum financial aid. Plus, you don't have to wait to get it in the mail (which is what happens when you request your free copy). I already blew my free copy when I got my wallet stolen last year.

If you suspect that someone is fraudulently using your name on a credit card. I did & when I called all 3 agencies to report it, I was sent a complimentary copy of my credit reports to check all of the cards potentially listed under my name. I'm sure the credit bureaus won't appreciate everyone claiming fraud, but for those of you willing to do it... The suspected fraud stays on your report for a few years
