some colleges weigh the same exact classes differently (credit wise).

for example, i took an Organic 1 class at UNC = 3 credits.
Same class at NYU = 5 credits.

when you are trying to calculate the science gpa...wouldnt the unequal credits throw off the gpa?

this effect is more noticable if you are a transfer student.

does amcas consider this?

AMCAS takes the class credits (semester hours), multiplies it by a numerical representation of the grade (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, etc.), and the result is called quality points. You total up all of the quality points from all classes, then divide them by your class credits (semester hours, quarters are calculated a little different) to get your overall GPA.

Example #1...
Organic 1 (School #1): 3 credits, grade of "C" = 6 quality points.
Organic 1 (School #2): 5 credits, grade of "A" = 20 quality points.
Total quality points is 26. Total of credits is 8. GPA for those two classes is 3.25

Example #2...
Organic 1 (School #1): 5 credits, grade of "C" = 10 quality points.
Organic 1 (School #2): 3 credits, grade of "A" = 12quality points.
Total quality points is 22. Total of credits is 8. GPA for those two classes is 2.75

Here is a spreadsheet I made to make the calculations easier...

Edit: I updated the spreadsheet to Version 1.13 to include the ability to specify individual credit hour types per course or to just use the default value you entered at the top of the sheet. This is useful for those who attended different universities that used different credit hour systems. Also updated the printout of the sheet to look better, with page # footer and repeated headings. Also updated the displayed rounding of entered values so they make more sense.

see, thats bull****. my high grades from my old school will be weighted less.

Some schools are even more confusing and report credits differently on their transcript vs. for Amcas. My school records grades on your transcript as 1 credit/term for a normal class, and depending on the year translated each credit into 3 or 4 Amcas credits (they changed the rule in the middle of my time there - annoying as hell).

God, 5 credit O chem class?? That must have been HELL!!!

no...its equivalent to a 3 credit orgo class at UNC. they just say 5 credits to get more bull**** money from their students and pretend like its hard core. (they include recitations and such).

for most kids, a full load is 16-18 credits, which due to "credit" inflation = 4 classes tops.

check this, i took physics, chem (and labs for both) + 2 econ classes, and it = 21 credits. i had to pay extra to take FOUR CLASSES. nyu is bull****.
