Anyone know anything at all about Creighton University (in Nebraska)'s online pharmD program?

aww man! i thought there was a response. 🙁 lol. Anyone know ANYTHING at all about this program? The screen freezes most of the time I go to their website.

I know that they're fully accredited and the cost is ~$16K per year. After I saw the price tag I stopped reading their website. No way I'm paying $16K to sit in front of my computer for four years.

Actually, the program is about 9k a semester over 11 semesters, so it's around 25k a year tuition...not including expenses for traveling to the campus every summer for lab practicum. What a swindle.

I went to a private university for undergrad and paid around 12 k per semester (lots of fin aid helped) so Creighton's tuition isn't shocking to me. But of course I don't want to just waste my money since I have very little of it in the first place. 🙂 Do you guys know anyone in the program that would be willing to talk to me? I'm from the DC area and the only program near here is Howard which is also very expensive, not counting the long commute there. It's still an option but Creighton online would work well for me for many reasons so of course I want to check it out as much as possible first before putting any time and money into the application process. I was able to access their site before but it keeps freezing on me now and I've tried different computers.

My wife was just accepted to Creightons online program. They have some weird requirements. My wife has a B.S. in biochem and an M.S. in Pharm Chem and works for GSK but still needs to take an Economics, Speech, and English class before she can start in the Fall. There was no interview though. I think the program is good for a select few and probably a bad idea for younger students. We shall see.

So it is totally online for classes and then you do labs during the summer? Interesting option. I will have to check it out if UF doesn't like me.

Thank you for posting Raptor. I'll be anxious to learn how the classes are for her once they start. Tell her I said congratulations. 🙂 I know it's an expensive option but as I've said before, it fits me for various reasons. I may have some questions about the application process when I'm going through it myself. I'll post on here when I do. Thanks again.

From what we know so far she will go out to Omaha the first week in August for Orientation and pick up her laptop. provided with high tuition. She will probably extend her 3 Pharm science years to 4 so she can do her clerkships after I graduate from Med school. The only thing that I am concerned about is her obtaining her clerkships. Retail pharmacy and a industrial rotation will not be that bad but there are not that many hospitals throughout the country that have academic clinical pharmacists available for rotations and the one's that do I am sure are not that willing to bring on a student that is from a Pharm school that they are not affiliated with. I don't know though as I am only familiar with med school clerkships which are not that hard to get distance clerkships. I guess that is why Creighton says you may have to go to Omaha to complete some of them. Lucky for my wife I will make some friends in my journey so she will have an easier time obtaining them. You have to be somewhat resourceful in this program to get through it.
Creighton now says that 1/3 of their PharmD students are utilising the distant option. I wish there were more like this but they are just for B.S. to PharmD.

It really depends on the type of person you are. I would not do this because the regular pharmacy ciriculum is brutal enough. It would be one thing if your a mom watching your kid during the day, but I dont know about working 40 hours a week. Plus, dont forget there is that period of time over the summer you will need to go to Nebraska to do your labs. I hope this helps!

My wife plans on it. Well almost. She will complete the first 3 years in 4. She only works a 38 hour week not that much different, but completed her M.S. in Pharm Chem in two years while working fulltime. It helps that we live near her work and that you she does not have to drive to class. Time management is the key. That and how much freetime and sleep are you willing to give up. I really think it depends on the person. If your the person that gets more out of reading than going to class it is doable.
My wife will either take vacation to go out to Omaha or her work will pay her for the time. The advantage of working for GSK and pursuing a PharmD.. Plus pay for everything we hope. If not that is what SL's are for.
I do not think I would ever recommend completing the final year while working fulltime. That would be brutal.

I don't particularly think an online course can possibly be as good as going to the school.

bad precedent if you ask me.

I share that feeling. Online classes should be for locksmithing and medical transcribing. Not for a professional degree. Would the physician community put up with an online MD program? (If so, sign me up).

Back to my wife again. Her M.S. in Pharm Chem was completely online. She may have attended two classes throughout the whole program. Mostly they were Webcast or Indy study. Her thesis was done at her place of employment with the approval othe school. The school that has this program is Lehigh University. For all that you that have never heard of it, it is as good as most IVY league schools but unfortunately there is no room any more schools so they are in another class. Anyway, also Dan Quale's (sp) daughter went there. So anyway for those of you that learn better from going to classes great. Some people have the motivation to do it all on their own.
Creighton is simply meeting the demand for more pharmacists. I know people in med school that attend class only a couple times per month and they did fine. That would be counted as distant wouldn't it be.

We shall see but I will continue to post observations of my wife's journey periodically to let you know the details and + and -'s.
